hi all,

i have a job offer from norfolk southern railroad in northern virginia...

i will have 2 work sites, one in manassas, and one in alexandria off of 495/395...

i am looking for a housing situation that is a small guest house, or finished basement rental situation...

if you, or one of your friends, know of something that would be located between the above locations, please send me a PM...

norfolk southern railroad requires me to arrive at one of the above work sites within 2 hrs of notification...

i will be in the area on 9/7/07 for further interviews, and could meet you/them in the late afternoon before my flight home...

references available, plus norfolk southern will have done a security/background check on me, too... ;)

thank you,

dana

Congratulations Dana. Don't know of any but I'll keep my ears open and ask around.

Getting to Manassas will be easier than getting to Alexandria inside the beltway, dependent on traffic - although it usually sucks! Even though it's only 26 miles straightline from Manassas to DC - it can be a 100 mile ride.

You might look along what are jokingly referred to as "hi speed avenues of approach - Rt 66 / 95. Remember, hi speed is relative.

What are your druthers - city/suburbs/inside the beltway/outside the beltway? As an example, Burke is a nice place and it's halfway between Manassas and Alexandria.

To be honest, even though traffic sucks, with a two hour limit you have a pretty wide choice of areas to search. Another example, Lorie and I live in Stafford and can get to Manassas thru back roads in about 45 min to 1 hour. Even in "usual" rush hour traffic (AM) I could "probably" get to Alexandria within 2 hours.

I know this gives you "too much information" and no recommendation. Sorry about that, I'll keep my ears open.

Jim

I can finish your thread title off:

northern virginia housing............... is as expensive as hell. Make sure they are paying you a small boatload of money.

thanks jim...

i'd 'druther' live somewhere midpoint along an imaginary line between alexandria and manassas...

unfortunately, as heidi references, i'll NOT be getting boatloads of money the first year...

i will be working frequently and making overtime, but i'd need to live close to get sleep as the railroads 'off' clock begins when you sign out... a large place is not important, other than parking for my vehicle and fjr....

it is at the moment a 'dream/fantasy' job... i am retired from the fire department, am a firefighter, and drove a fire pumper... how cool to be a railroad man and drive a locomotive for a second career...

not many people get to 'grow up' and do both things they wanted to do as a kid...

maybe i won't have all the money i could squeeze out of life in a more lucrative career, but then maybe i'll be happy doing what i want... <shrug>

:)
