I've read a lot of heated debate about breaking in an FJR. I have chosen not to do the MotoMan method because I'm transition from a cruiser that rarely, if ever, saw 4500RPM, there's no way I'm red lining the FJR in any gear. So I'm going to split the difference between the manual and the MotoMan method that better suites my riding ability.

Although it was a bit warm around 100 degrees, I went for a great 26 mile ride today through Hidden Valley to Malibu and back. The hottest the bike got was 4 to 5 bars. However, if I rolled the throttle aggressively there was a bit of a hesitation and a couple of times when coming to a stop when I pulled the clutch in the bike stalled. It started immediately or if I had enough momentum in second I bump started it and it fired right up.

Anyone else experience this? Is this something I should be concerned about or is there an adjustment that needs to be made at the dealer?

Hmmm, No MotoMan? What other documented procedure did you use? Stalling is usually from idle set too low. It is set to 1100rpm, right?

Later, De

Yep, the first thing you should look at for a stall when returning to idle, is what De mentioned; check the idle speed. The manual suggests 1000 to 1100; the general recommencation is to use the 1100 rpm figure. If this doesn't work for you, and since your bike is new, time to take it back to the dealer.

Quite a few have done a modified MotoMan (me included); really, there aren't too many no, no's with breakin. The only two that come to mind are not to thrash the rpm's before letting the bike warmup sufficientlly, and the other, to not run a new bike at constant rpm for extended time. You can search and find volumes of advice on breakin, good luck with your new bike.

Stalling is not normal and in some situations could be dangerous. Get the dealer to set it up right.

The snachy throttle response is common and due to Yamaha's struggling with the new stricter emissions regs and trying to deal with them and still use regular gas. I have seen this lean running issue throughout motorcycledom in the last few years. Some other mfgs end up with smoother results (stock) but require 91+ as part of the tuning solution. I'll take Yams solution because it can easily be made as good or better aftermarket and you still can use 87. There are a billion threads that cover this, from Barbarian jumper mods to PCIII's and throttle body syncing (commonly off) to throttle cable improvements. In a nutshell, bikes now run very lean from 0-4000 rpm as that is where they are certified. Richen them up a bit and all evils dissapear. The PCIII is the best (IMO) solution albiet at a cost..

There is another thread about an '08 with stalling problems linked here.

Since he "titled" it stalling problem, it may be easier to track...... ....and not be confused with a discussion about proper break-in technique.

It seems to be developing into a trend. Let's hope it is as simple as the idle being set too low (some are delivered @ 1,000 rpms when the manual calls for 1100) or a TPS adjustment. Either way, its back to the dealer for you.

If it isn't a simple adjustment, make sure your bike's issue it is "logged" into the Yamaha computer.....er...uhm...Paging Yamaha Cypress...Mr. Cypress to the white courtesy phone, please.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll check my idle setting this morning.

MadMike, thanks for the link, that pretty much sounds like my problem.

What is the best way to search this forum? Last night I noticed that some people use a "command line" type of search -- stalling problem site:fjrforum.com, for example. Is this the correct syntax for this type of search? If not what is?

I don't know the "best" way to search the forum. I have found that the Google method is the easiest for me. It is discussed here:

"Software and Board Operation"

Here's an example link: stalling site:fjrforum.com

I stalled my 08 a few times during the first 300 miles while getting use to it. Set the idle and sync’d the throttle bodies at 300, never stalled again. Never had a reason to exceed 4500 during the first 600, nor the last 1000..

What about the thrill of power between 4500 and red line?

Never said I haven't, just no reason to.. but the bike will exceed the speed limit below 4500
