New to this forum and am leaning towards purchasing an older FJR on my way to Colorado for a dirt riding expedition. Is $3795 too much for a 2005 FJR with new tires and brakes and 40,000 or so miles? Looks to be really nice and well taken care of.

Not a terrible price but not giving it away either.  For a bike of that age, the aftermarket stuff is a significant factor in the bike's market value - aftermarket suspension, seat, windshield, topbox, heated grips, cruise control, aux. lighting, exhaust etc.   Even tire condition.  Sometimes owners will strip off the goodies and sell them separately since people don't want to pay much for extras on the bike.

Good maintenance records and physical evidence of good care and attention are gold.  I wouldn't worry about the miles at all if the other indicators are positive.  The newer FJRs offer some nice amenities but the 2005 is still a great bike.  Is it ABS or not?  If so, make sure the rear ABS is working.

If things look good, I would offer something less than that (without being insulting) and see where it goes from there.  The 2005 blue is nice!

Just for reference,  I just sold a pristine 04 with a **** ton of farkles and 22k miles. It went for $4,000

All depends, If your going to keep it and ride the **** out of it until it doesn't run anymore then yes buy it. If you don't end up liking it

then it will be your loss. JMO

In my opinion, worth all of 2 cents, the price seems a little high to me, of course depending on condition.

For reference, I sold (gave away) a 2006 and 2007 AE model for much less than that. Granted, higher mileage, and had some warts, but not a train wreck by any means.

If I was to buy today, I would buy a 2006 (Gen II) or above, just a personal preference.

Does this bike have ABS? ABS is a nice addition to me.

Take everything into consideration and buy the newest one you want/can, you'll thank me later. A well taken care of FJR of any year is good bike. Newer ones are better equipped but my '07 will run a long time yet. Helluva bike for not a lot of money.
