Depends on how a rider fits on there. One potential benefit I see is not having the large air gap between rider's back and the beginning of the trunk. That is bound to minimize turbulence / improve airflow (therefore mileage?). If you know you aren't going to have a passenger, this makes sense (in that spendy BMW kinda way)

To up my post count the answer is: $999. Thought it would be more given the price on the FJR smuggler.
