Greetings,

I just sold my 2002 Triumph Sprint ST and have purchased a 2005 Blue FJR with 2,350 miles on her.

On Friday I'll be taking the Rail Road to pick her up and am in need of some ideas for the ride home.

The bike is located in Long Island NY and I live in York PA. Other than a direct ride home on I-95, Ive considered riding down to Atlantic City NJ for dinner and take the back roads up to York County.

Anybody familiar with these locations? Any ideas and/or roads not to miss?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

At exit 63 on the P'way you can go down the back way to AC.

From AC to York there are a lot of back roads. 30,70,72,206,539

Wouldn't it be a better trip to go through Northern NY and NJ, then circle down??

Just my two cents :)

Maybe, but, there aren't any casinos along the way....unless you leave Long Island and head north towards CT to hit Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun.

Where on Long Island are your picking it up?

You might consider taking one of the ferries from Long Island over to CT and then ride through the Berkshires and west across the Hudson valley and then south to York. That way you get a 1 1/2 hour boat ride, a ride through the mountains, and some great scenery overall.

If you decide to come through the Hudson Valley I can recommend some good riding through the Catskills to PA.

The bike is located in Speonk, Long Island (I guess thats the northern part of the island). I'm in no way set on a particular route home because I am completely unfamiliar with any of the areas (I'm originally a California boy) Needless to say, it's all open roads and I'd like to make it as exciting as possible, yet avoid as many cagers and cities (busy areas) as possible. Country/mountain roads is where I'm most comfortable.

Riding the ferry might be fun...what does a fare cost?

Appreciate the ideas coming in!!!

Down in south jersey you run through pine barrens, flat land, and vactioners. Some decent riding down here, to be honest I always head north or west to capture better riding. I would stick north in the peaks. Some great rides up there for sure.

Can you give me some idea of where the peaks are in the 'north'? Maybe some small towns that my GPS can plot out?

If you pick it up in Speonk you could ride to the Ferry out of Port Jefferson which runs to Bridgeport CT. Not a very pretty ride at all from Speonk to Port Jeff. The other alternative is to ride east on Long Island to the Cross Sound Ferry out of Orient Point. This is a very nice ride to the ferry and would take you about an hour or so. The other alternative is to ride to Sag Harbor (my home) and I'll show you around a bit before you head out. Sag Harbor to Shelter Island (ferry), Shelter Island to Greeport (ferry), and Greenport to Orient.

Wished I had the time to head North/North East as that is on my 'things to do list'; however, I'm also an MSF coach and will be teaching bright-N-early Saturday morning (7am) As it is, traveling through NJ will put me home around 11pm. I'll be so excited that I probably make it home and shine up my new toy only to realize that I have to teach in several hours. So, I must bow out of your kindness and lean to roads closer to home.

Thank you for the consideration...and maybe we can hook up in the near future.

Here's an idea I looked up on Googlemap.com.

Speonk NY to Marmora NJ 195 miles 3.5hrs

Marmora NJ to Cedarville NJ 35 miles 1hr

Cedarville NJ to Susquehanna State Park MD 73 miles 1.75hrs

Susquehanna State Park MD to York PA 41 miles 1.1hrs

TOTAL 345 miles 7.5 hours

Any suggestions to this itenary?

South Jersey? It's a sandbar like Florida. That means nothing impeded construction of straight roads. If you want to see Atlantic City, I suppose you could do that.

Personally, I would avoid the NYC madness by shooting for the Port Jefferson - Bridgeport ferry, then skirt around the northern burbs of NYC crossing the Hudson on US 6 to Port Jervis PA. From there take Old Mine Road down the NJ side of the Delaware river (a road guaranteed not to disappoint, but be careful at least on FJR has crashed on Old Mine Road). 209 on the PA side is OK too, perhaps more scenic, but can get really choked with traffic coming into East Stroudsburg. From there, take 209 to Port Carbon, then south towards Lancaster and York via Womelsdorf. Streets & Trips claims that's 315 miles and will take 7:54 (which I think is pretty optimistic).

Sussex county, in the north end of NY, is loaded with good roads, but any back road will add to the time.

I doubt you'll save any time trying to pass through NYC on a Saturday afternoon. If you decide to do that then I suggest you just take the slab, Route 80, from the George Washington Bridge, west across NJ at least as far as Rockaway Township, and maybe all the way to Blairstown, and then try some better roads from there. Lots of shopping traffic in NJ until you get past the Rockaway Mall. From there you can decide how much time you want to spend on the back roads and you can always head back to the slab if you need to make time.

Geezer, now this is looking more like a fun ride!!! This route is now at the top of a short list. (EDITED NOTE: $40 for ferrying me and my bike? This may be more than I want to pay).

Thank you.

I didn't realize the NJ coast was all sandbars. I'd prefer to stay away from that.

Any other thoughts for a Friday Trip?

As much as I'd like to take all the credit, UweRoss provided that map. Enjoy the ride and let us know how you make out.

The map from UweRoss would be a great ride unless you want to do some hotel nights, then just add to it by going further north. Don't sweat the $40, as it'll save the road heat, traffic congestion, getting lost, and tollbooths of going through the city. Port Jeff is kinda scenic and the ferry is pretty small. I ride to Atlantic City now and then and agree that the Jersey pine barrens can be pretty boring other than the sand on the road.

I thought it was only $27. But even if it was $50, I'd pay it in a heartbeat to avoid having to deal with the insanity in and immediately around NYC.

Since not everyone has Streets & Trips, I decided to see what I could do with Google Maps. There are a few things I would do differently, but this should give you a good idea: Clicky
