OEM Yamaha heated grips

I would like to hear from people that have the Yamaha heated grips. What features do they have? How do you like them? How well do they work? Any comments on difficulty/ease of installation.

Well, if you turn them on, they heat your hand grips . The ones I have have a dial where you adjust the temperature and I have never had the need to turn it past the halfway mark.

Dunno, mine came standard with the bike. The shop had to replace the right-hand one because it was damaged (cut) during shipment from the factory and I did not get the idea that it was a big issue.

I had them installed by the Dealer when I got my 08. They work great. I keep them on hi, initially so they warm up quickly. It takes about 4-5 mins to get warm to the point that I have to turn them down. They look great as the switch is intergrated into the left body panel. They are not cheap but work great.

Can't speak for the original install as mine came std on the '06 AE. They work great, and do what you'd expect them to do... helpful up here in the Great White North.

I have had the right grip off to do the G2 throttle cam mod, and it is no problem to re-install. A bit of compressed air to "ballon" the grip and it slips right on. Hardest part is making sure the cable is lined up properly so that everything fits back together properly.

Thanks for the info. I realize it's quite elementary, but somewhere else in this forum I thought I saw someone say they were speed sensitive, I thought, wow, what's that about?

I just got my FJR, I should have negotiated the heated grips installed but I didn't, so that's water under the bridge. I just got rid of a BMW K bike that had heated grips and electronic cruise control and I want those features on my FJR. I'll definitely go with the Yamaha grips and install them myself, I hope it's not too difficult, it looks like it's all plug and play. I like the tip of pressured air to remove the grips.

I live in the Texas Gulf Coast, near Louisiana. But I find heated grips are great in this climate too for riding year round. It's a luxury I have gotten used to I love them.

There are two different Yamaha heated grip systems.

One is a universal kit, which was the only one available for the Gen I FJRs. It has an infinitely variable controller driving a total of 36 watts through the grips. The kit is not very well documented (Chinglish, with cruddy pixs), but the system works great. There is a large ugly block with the controller knob that mounts on a bracket over the top of the clutch reservoir.

The other system is standard on the AE. It is also has an infinitely variable controller, but the owners manual also notes that "When the vehicle is stopped or traveling at extremely low speeds (e.g., in traffic jams), the grip warmer temperature is lower [than] when traveling at higher speeds". The controller is integrated into the left side, top faring panel and is a very neat install. In order to get this controller you have to use a P/N fiche to look up the various pieces because the AE controller is not available as a kit. If you look at Gen II accessories for heated grips it will reference the universal kit that is used on the Gen I’s. Gen II Kit Number

They can standard on my AE. I love them. The only minor drawback is that the controller is right behind the left handlebar and so is a bit tricky to adjust the temp when you're blazing down the road. They reduce in power at slow/stopped speeds because the alternator has reduced output at low revs. No-brainer putting them on the grips, I had to take mine off when I installed the G2 throttle tube. But I don't know how far down into the depths you have to go to get to the wiring harness plug in. Also don't know if the "A" model has a plug in the factory harness. You should probably check that first.

The 'A' wiring harness has all the connectors necessary to install the heated grip controller and grips, the A and AE use the same harness.

When I last looked all I saw was a picture of the Gen I kit and didn't go any farther. Upon clicking the link -- there they are, the Gen II Kit!

I had my yammie oem heat grips installed upon purchase. The dash knob-case is a perfect fit, of course. The heat works very well.... the knob doesn't have pre-set places. Wherever you turn it is where the heat is adjusted. And I've only had it all the way hot-as-possible only once.... and indeed it puts out more than enough heat.

Just curious, has anyone tried grip puppies on their heated grips? I've had experience with heated grips on my previous ride (BMW) and know how valuable they can be. At this time I can't decide between the factory parts ($300+)and Hot Grips ($100). As you all know, $200 is almost two tanks of gas.

I've got the grip puppies over heated grips. They still get fairly warm, but not quite as much as without.

I had the grips installed on my 08 at the dealership. They work well. At less than 8 MPH the power get cut to them by half or better. Seems that the quicker you go the warmer they get. So I guess speed sensitive would be a correct statement.
