Well, my sixth run at the Utah 1088. Leaving at o'dark thirty to get through Boise through rush hour and into SLC before the serious heat of the day.

GPS tracking an blogging at the usual place, www.mattwatkins.org/ibr09 with hopefully some pictures and stories of other forum members. I believe OCFJR is about 4 hours behind me and know RJ is heading over Thursday sometime. WC is supposedly ahead of me a bit, but who knows if I catch up in the dark to him.

See you all in SLC. The rally rock awaits.

Me jealous of you and your other early-start posse. That's Fonzie cool night rider.
My departure will be aprox 12hours behind you and my route won't bee cool, but will be groovy and will contain some NV style fun as I trek through the Battle Born State.

-And a new twist: I've already arranged what I hope to be my only LEO encounter (yep, best to pre-arrange fuzz encounters and get them out of the way) This will happen in Elko. Man I hate the fuzz. Wish me luck.

Friday morning I'll wake up from a night of NV-style debauchery on the Utard border (Bendover USA) and will coast into SLC to meet up with you and all of the fun.

Unlike you, I won't be updating, blogging or such, --->seems in my haste to get ready: My beloved blackberry went through the washing machine and isn't bouncing back nearly as well as the rolling papers and gerbils that took the same journey -yes had them all in the same pair of pants.

Finally Matt, remember the first 1088 checkpoint 3years ago(?) .....the naked man in the car who went into then out of the quick-mart? Seems the same M.O. is already happening over in Utard, (clicky) ..and how we know it's time to twist the throttle for the 1088.

Anyone bored can see my progress or lack of here -full weekend

and Here -Rally only.

And being that I earned that damn rock for the full rally last year, I will be on best behavior this year --uhhh, well that's the plan anyway.

Well, you're one of the few, the proud, the select group of us rock-carriers. Yes, I too carried that damned rock the entire rally a few years ago. I guess guys like you and me always have something to say, although it's not always at the most appropriate time. ;)

Good luck to you, Matt, Eric, WC, Brad and all the others that will be doing there best to knock off that local UT dude that always seems to win. And say hey to everyone at the BBQ, and tip a few back for me. :drinks:

+1 Best wishes and safe riding, be watching form the desk seat.

Tony

Best of luck to all you bastages!

Bummed I won't make it this year. Say 'Hi' to the rock for me.

Seems only a privileged few have the honor of carrying the "Rock".

Shouldn't it be engraved with the riders name and the year he had the privilege of carrying it?

Sigh. As much as I hate to admit it...there's one likely higher finishing position for me as a result. ;)

Just rolled in and blogged about it. See a little human interest blurb on one of our recent forum additions. Just be advised all that www.mattwatkins.org/ibr may become my main outlet for info...especially as Saturday morning gets closer.

P.S. I had to carry the rock for the whole rally one year. Seems us FJR rabble get saddled with that hideous igneous paper weight a fair amount. ;)

Just got off work, packing up the bike for a midnight departure. If that wildfire in Flagstaff doesn't detour me this 1088 virgin should be rolling into SLC before noon. See y'all tomorrow.

Good luck all...be safe...have fun. Wish I was there, but on the bright side I don't have to decide whether to ride to Vegas for that &*!$ keno chip!

Ain't that the freakin truth!

Every freaking year I go there when it's a bazillion degrees. Won't miss that at all.

It's bad enough here in Phoenix, 114 today and we tied a record for lowest humidity - 3%! I had no idea it could get that low.

After my Elko fuzz encounter, ...

(I hate the fuzzz ....but as far as fuzzsters go, this one ain't as swiney as most.) I got off easy, taser wounds are hardly noticeable under the billy club bruises.

I eventually made it to Wendover where some good nevada style fun was plentiful.

....then this across the very groovy salt flats to SLC and rally HQ.

Manged to get the Battle Born Bike through tech inspection via the very detailed eye of LD legend Dave M.

even got through the convoluted odometer check route.

----->and now waiting for the IGGSTER to show me how to best use my skyway hydration thingy that I kinda (and kinda not) threw on the bike before leaving renoville. My first time using on-bike hydration.

Iggy, make sure he understands on-bike bladder relief.

And I know for a fact that RJ is NOT saucy. More of a "lime" type. As in tequila.

Uh, let's see, you sit here, you suck that. That's how it's done in MOST places, but SLC isn't like MOST places. And maybe Iggy has some sort of new technique he's going to teach you (while Frog Pirate Ken video records it and puts it on YouTube for the whole world to watch).
