If your choice of GPS runs off the 12V socket in the glove box, do you ride with the box open?

Or is there another way?

An inquiring mind on our Forum would appreciate yr input :D

Not an '06 owner, but, isn't there a hole in the bottom of the box to provide space for power cords to come out of it?

There's a hole in the bottom of the glove box, that has a rubber grommet with a small hole in it. Pop out the grommet, place it over your power cable to the GPS, and re-install grommet. Simple as that.

Dang guys, yer slippin' up! It took you a full 12 minutes to come up with an answer... :D :D :D

Thanks, much appreciated. This Forum rocks! :clapping:

Ran mine with the car plug - door closed and cable routed to the hinge side of the box because there was no room to route the rather large plug though the hole in the box.

I wanted mine to be ignition controlled, so it was OK except for the fact that the cabling was pretty messy.

Now I have the BlueSea fuse block under my seat and it's neatly and properly wired and fused and connected to the Autocom.

Depends on what kind of unit you have (nothing personal).

If it has an internal battery, it doesn't matter how you wire it up, unless you let it die.

Mine is a Garmin, without internal battery. So I really needed it wired to the battery for several reasons:

1) The calculations continue to run (important!),

2) I can use it when the bike is off (which is often), and

3) power continuity.

I had a major problem when running it off the powerlet ... minor bumps in the road causes fractional seconds of power flux, and the trip computer calcs were waaay off.

1. Units with internal batteries should NOT be wired direct to the battery because their chargers will drain the vehicle's battery over time. Units with internal batteries are also not susceptible to the power flicks you describe.

2. Units with or without batteries: When it's switched off, it's off - except for the real time clock there are no calculations, no almanac updates, nothing. When the unit is powered on it does NOTHING until it acquires satellite or you tell it to run on simulator.

3. On a unit with no internal battery you might lose a pending tracklog entry if you cut power . On the other hand, if you wire a unit directly to battery you may forget to turn it off and then you're back to having a dead battery in your vehicle.

4. If you need to use a unit that doesn't have an internal battery with the bike off, you can turn the key to 'on' with the kill switch enabled - similar to the 'accessory' position in a car - and do your 'thing' that way.

One reason I went with a 276c was that it has an internal battery so I can take it into a rest stop and work with it and also in case I need to hike I can also carry it with me. Further, because it has an internal battery it executes an orderly shutdown 30 seconds after I switch the ignition off (unless I tell it to stay on) and it automatically comes back on with the ignition.

You can do that but why? It's so easy to get the Garmin direct power wire and connect it to the battery. On the '06, it's a breeze.

I run the wires out towards teh front of the door and push it closed. Seems to work fine (it's a temporary solution - my power buss and relays finally came so they'll get installed soon).
