There are some threads with evaluations and comments about the new FJR suspension upgrades offered through a cooperative effort with Cogent Dynamics (www.motocd.com) and OhlinsUSA.

Thread-1

Thread-2

I've been working with Rick Tannenbaum at Cogent Dynamics to organize a group buy opportunity. THE GROUP BUY PRICING WILL NOT BE POSTED ON ANY FORUM. Basic RETAIL prices are listed below. GroupBuy pricing is typically a 20% or greater discount.

Prices listed below are RETAIL. You must PM me with your request for the GB pricing and special GB codes required to receive the discount(s).

Cogent/Ohlins FJR Group Buy

Cogent/Ohlins fork cartridge kit (includes fork springs, fluids and installation) $ 1,340

Cartridge Kit above & Ohlins YA-707 Rear Shock (rear shock is self-install)...... $ 2,476

Jeff,

Does this special offer include a "keeps up with HaulinAshe in Appalachian Mountain twisties" guarantee?

Aside from Ashe, I've heard 3 separate (very experienced) FJR riders' reports on this setup; all 3 were in awe, post-ride. Apparently, this is the Pinnacle of ST suspension technology.

Damn, I KNOW this is something I need to do, and soon, from everything I've seen on the board ('05 with original suspension and about 35K miles). But what I don't know about suspensions is pretty much everything. Folks out this way have used GP suspensions up in Oregon and think highly of them. If I used them, I'd be doing a ride-in (this winter, most likely). So the question is, is there a big advantage to riding in for this work, compared to doing it by mail/UPS?

A major issue to me is whether they do it or "you-do-it-yourself." How huge of a project is this to take on, when you've never done it before? Could (and would) a local shop or dealership do the work if I brought in an FJR and a back seat full of suspension parts, and if so, how big (read: expensive) of a job would that be?

I'm wondering if the shipping plus the separate installation labor would negate the benefit of this GB? What do you guys think?

In any case, I appreciate the efforts and the explanations posted by the OP for this whole project. Thanks, Jeff.

The discounted GroupBuy price for the fork kit, includes installation when your forks are shipped to Cogent.

I would think shipping (using a commercial UPS account) would be less than $30 each way.

My bike needs suspension work done and it'll get done, but I'm sorry to say this is just to spicy for my pocketbook. I'm gonna start researching other more wallet friendly alternatives.

But I'm gonna be envious as hell of anybody who has this done.

HA,

In one of the threads you mention availability for the Gen I's. Is the pricing the same for the cartridge kit? What about the pricing on the shock for them as well? I believe it's the YA-342?

Thanks,

-Paul

The pricing is the same for Gen-I. Main difference is that in order for the 25mm Cogent/Ohlins fork cartridge to fit a Gen-I fork, the lower fork tube must have some minor machining work done. The process is NOT reversible, but the work is included in the GB pricing for both Gens. In other words..., Gen-I must ship their forks to Cogent for non-reversible modification. You just can't fit 10 lbs. of ... into a 5 lb. sack. :(

I know Ohlins is working to determine if the YA-707/YA-036 will fit Gen-I. I don't see any reason it would not, but we have not (yet) tried actually installing one on a Gen-I. That should happen soon.

In the meantime, I'm sure if you wanted to get in on the GB, you can lock in with your deposit on the deal, and if the YA-707 doesn't fit, Cogent/Ohlins will let you opt out or purchase the 342. Our GB is based on minimum participants, and you are much better off with the YA-707 or YA-036 if they will fit.

This is pretty spicy but not that pricey when you look at what you are getting. A 25mm cartridge setup usually runs about $1500 so this is almost like buying a cartridge and getting a Ohlins shock for 75 percent off. The first time I visited GPSuspension I asked about their 25mm cartridge kit and was told it is total overkill for street riding...but so is the motor in my ZX-14 and I love it. I am just lusting for this group buy but the timing is terrible. Three weeks ago I had a 05 FJR with the GPSuspension fork kit and a well used Wilbers shock. Now I have a 08 FJR with the GPSuspension fork kit and a totally rebuilt Wilbers shock and the 08 rides and handles better than the 05 ever did...maybe the 800 pound spring that was put on the Wilbers during the rebuild has something to do with it but whatever the reason it really goes around a corner while giving a plush ride...but its not overkill and overkill would be fun to have.

Everyone complains about the quality of roads but most of the roads that I ride on are actually pretty good even if they are hard on tires. If I did a lot of riding on rough roads with broken or uneven pavement, I think this group buy would be an opportunity that would be too good to pass up.

Cogent has added the Ohlins shocks made specifically for Gen-I bikes to the GroupBuy. Revisions made to the original post.

Assuming the 707/036 are found to fit the Gen I's (please let us know if you hear for certain), what makes these shock options more advantageous than the 342? (Other than the lower price)

Also, do we count as a GB participant if we can only do a rear shock at this time?

Thanks for your hard work on this!

The YA-707/YA-036 are forward-compatible with newer FJRs. If you decided to replace your Gen-I with a new(er) bike, you would have a shock that fits it. Also, if for some reason you needed to sell the shock outright, there's a bigger market.

Yes, if you are purchasing only a rear shock, your purchase goes toward the minimum requirement for shocks, and helps lock in that part of the GB pricing. Rick said ten shocks, mix & match is fine.

Regarding fitment, The YA342 Gen I shock is a piggyback reservoir design. For the Gen I chassis, that is the best fit. [ FYI: the YA052 was discontinued as the 342 also fits the non-ABS version. There was no reason to have two different part numbers.] The Gen II chassis uses a remote reservoir that mounts on the right side behind the bracket that holds the muffler/pass. peg.

The only problem that I KNOW of, is if you were to try putting a YA707 on a Gen I chassis THAT HAS ABS. The 342 has a large metal bracket included in it's box for combining the ABS unit and the shock's hydraulic preloader unit master cylinder.

As long as the Gen I chassis does NOT have ABS, I see no reason why the 707 wouldn't fit just fine. Having said that, I/we have NOT tried it. I believe Cogent plans to 'test fit' one to find out for sure. I *believe* that the remote reservoir will mount on the Gen I just fine, but again, I do not know for sure.

FWIW, just to muddy this a little further, I have a customer who mounted a used YA342 Gen I shock on his Gen II bike. He says it works/fits just fine...

And while I'm at it, I want to thank HaulinAshe for administering this GB. It's a LOT of work and time on a purely volunteer task. :drinks:

I happen to have a Gen I that does not have ABS, in case there is a need for a guinea pig...

Also, I know how much work GB's can be, so thanks again HaulinAshe!

Ok I'm all in for the works. Hey, I can't take it with me, so I may as well bolt it on my bike and ride the hell out of it!

Now I have something to look forward to all winter.

After HA sent me the GB pricing I've revised my 'just a shock' position. I'm in for the whole deal as well. Between that and the Russell I expect to be in motorcycle nirvana next spring.

Guys,

Call Cogent and speak with Joyce 828 628 9025. Put your $100 deposit down.

GET ON THIS AND ORDER NOW! I have to wait until we reach 10 for them to ship the stuff and I am not known for Zen-like patience! :dribble:
