I changed my oil thr other day and since then my oil light has come on several times but only stays on for a minute or two. I used Rotella 15w 40 and a wlmart oil filter. The only thing I did different is the filter, I normally use Yamaha. Should i switch out the filter. Yes there is enough oil in it.

I would check again.................... Be sure it's between the two lines on the glass. I've only ever had that issue with my old FZ750 that burned a bit too much oil. I knew I need to add some when the oil light would come on at startup for a minute or two.

if you don't pre-fill the filter before installation, you will need a gob of oil after running the bike a few minutes and shutting it down. I wait 10-15 minutes after pouring in the oil and running the bike for a few minutes (I wait till I get a bar or two on the temp indicator). I do pour enuf (clean) oil into the filter till the filter element is saturated and there's maybe 1/4 full of "loose" oil in the bottom of the filter in the middle before installing it.

I use the same setup, without a hitch.

I'll assume you used a gallon jug of Rotella, and dispensed the entire jug into the bike. Even with a new filter it should be technically fine as is, but that extra .25 quart gets it topped off. Make sure level is correct while on center stand, level ground.

If it continues be very concerned. Could be electrical issue or worse clogged oil passage somewhere.

Start trouble shooting it down. Hopefully you have a manual, it should show how to check the electrical on sensors.

Good luck.

I'm not sure about GEN I's. But on Gen II after an oil change and the first ride or two, a gentle sweeper will cause the light to come on. Pull over, turn off the ignition, check the oil level (level after a minute or two, per owner's manual). It will be level. Turn on the ignition and the problem disappears until the next oil change. I don't pre-load the filter. YMMV as this is about oil.

As previously posted, the FJR does not have an oil pressure "idiot light", which surprised me, since my BMW's have one. I understand this practice is common on alot of bikes. To check oil pressure, a plug must be removed on the lower right side of the engine and an oil pressure gauge installed.

Hopefully, all you need is more oil or something is wrong with your oil level sensor circuit.

Do you have an FJR Owner's Manual for your bike?

If so, it's (probably?) covered there in sufficient detail -- under: "Instrument and Control Functions -- Oil level warning light."

I have a similar problem: After the previous oil change with 15W/30 oil after one hour or little more riding fast the oil light came on. Today I changed the oil with 20W/50, and the light came on after just 15 minutes riding in the city (slow peak traffic hour) Same oil brand and same oil filter that I used for the last 45000 km.

I added more oil, just over the upper mark, but the light still on.

I feel that the oil pump is working OK because the oil level drops quickly when the engine start cold or hot.

I don't want to use the bike until know what is happening because I don't want to destroy the cams or something else.

Please help me!

The oil level "drops" because the pump is filling the semi-empty filter and the engine oil passages.

IMO.... I'd be looking for an electrical problem...perhaps the oil level switch itself. (I'll bet that isn't "fun" to change.)

That's something to try.

Instructions to replace the level sensor? Some How-To?
