Guys (and gals),

I found what appears to be some kind of an oily

substance next to the sidecase on my bike (2005).

I haven't ridden it for about two weeks, but there

was a puddle of something there before, but I couldn't

tell what it was.

I put some newspaper down and let it sit for about a

week to see if anything would show up on the newspaper,

but nothing appeared.

I checked the site glass with the bike on the center stand,

and the oil still looks good.

I don't know what to do...it runs just fine. I checked the oil

filter and drain plug, but everything is dry.

Any suggestions?

TIA...

Jim

So maybe it's not motor oil then?

Try checking final drive oil and look for any leaks/drips around the swingarm/driveshaft/final gearcase area.

If you are talking about your left side case you might want to check your rear drive.

Jim,

According to my sources JAP bike's don't leak any substance, so I'd suspect a H.D. product snuck inta yer joint an dropped it's load :assassin: That or that mess was there long before ,an ya's was to drunk ta realize it wuz there. Damn cages.

:jester:

Park it on the centerstand over an old sheet. Wipe bottom surfaces clean with rag. Wait for drip. Then use a plumb-bob to locate the likely source. (Baring the liquid running before the drip) Then come back and tell us where it came from.

What you're a roofer too? If It wasn't an American Bike, then no doubt the Asphalt shingles on his joint were "braking down" to their base materials, hence the oil slick.

Damn head injuries, really DO mess a body up

Are you sure somebody's not messing with you? You know, pour a little oil under your bike then stand back and watch the fun? Not that I've ever done anything like that.....

If it looked relatively clear but oily, you probably blew your rear shock. First shock went kablooey on me at about 6K miles. I was not amused. Since an OEM replacement is in the $600 dollar range, might be time to think aftermarket suspenders.

Good luck,

It might be coming from the underside of a muffler. On a few occasions I have seen a dark, creosote colored liquid ooze out of a weep hole on my mufflers. It looks like it might be oil but it's not. You can easily remove it from the floor with a damp cloth.

Looking under the mufflers you can see where the liquid oozes out of the weep hole near the front and then it thinly spreads across the underside of the muffler. But it easily wipes off with a damp cloth.

Holy shitake! Yours blew at 6k???? Where you punishing it or what? I'm a total waddling lard *** I'm okay at 8.3k mi, but now you've got me nervous... The surgery will help with the fat, but ****** shocks are out of my control...anybody else lose integrity with stock shocks early on?

It was a warranty replacement at 6K. I'm guessing some form of rubber aneurism. Although I was quite annoyed with the oil on my garage floor, I was very happy it waited until after I was home and parked before it puked. My 2nd one crapped out about 25K later - and no, I didn't lose any weight (roughly 240# in full gear plus whatever's in the side bags) and the punishment was far more severe. Third shock is down to its last two clicks of adjustment at just over 47K total miles (bought it used) - I predict, budget permitting, I'll be making a trip to an aftermarket shock retailer some time this winter.

"Then use Plumb-Bob to locate the likely source."
Is Plumb-Bob a new member on this forum??
Yes. He's a nice guy, but rather short in stature. Should fit quite easily under the bike.

Oh, here's one of his early childhood pictures: plumb bob

My son's 2004 is leaking on the left side. We're going to check it this weekend. I'm guessing a loose nut and/or leaking "O" ring seal on the drive shaft at the output shaft
