After an oil change (at a dealer) a few days ago I unfortunately found out that they hadn't re-installed the oil drain plug properly. I came to understand this at 7:30 yesterday morning while riding at speed in the ALDERs Rally. Needless to say my rally was shot. I was fortunate to be able to pullover and shut it off long before the oil ran dry but not before my back tire became covered. I consider myself lucky I didn't lose the back wheel and go down. After taking it to a shop, (not the one that did the half assed oil change) they installed a new plug and cleaned the tire as best they could. The tire now looks and feels fine but I am wondering if being coated in oil would compromise the tire in some way?I had new Avon's installed at the same time as the oil change so it is a brand new tire.

I would let the dealer know what happened, and give them a little bit of ****.

If you paid for the fix, I would give that dealer the bill.

I would never let any dealer change my oil.

I swear I will never let anyone unknown work on my bike. I hope you at least send them copy of this picture and a letter on a lawyer's letterhead. That is totally unacceptable! Glad you lived to tell the tale.

Gypsy, that pic makes me sick. It just makes me angry when stuff like this happens. I also think the tire would be fine, but I would have a long talk with that dealer. I would want paid for the oil change and a tire... I would also send a pic to mother Yamaha to see there dealer network SUCKS!!! There is a local guy had his ST1300 in the local Honda/Yamaha shop for a oil change and the kid changing his oil went to lunch. The other kid thought it was done and send him on his way. 2 mile later the engine is locked up, that shop wanted to rebuild it... What a joke... Good luck, and I hope you didn't shorted the like of your FJR... I had a old man tell me long ago. There is only two way for a drain plug to be. All the way out, or all the way in....Smitty

If it were me, I would replace the tire and insist the dealer cover it. It's not worth the risk. Any oil that got into the tire might work its way out when the tire gets warm/hot.

Use simple green on the tire and it will eat through any oil that may be lingering.

Just another reason to never let some yoyo a the dealership fiddle with your bike. This kind of mistake on a car may be costly, on a bike they are messing with your life.

I wonder how much you could sue them for if your rear end slips out on ya's and ya break a toenail or something?

Man, after seeing that huge trail of oil left by your back tire I'd have to say you were more than lucky to keep that thing on its wheels. I had something similar happen once, it was the absolute last time any dealer put their hands on any motorcycle of mine. And it will stay that way for as long as possible.

Your tire should be fine, just make sure it's clean. Westley's Bleche-wite is a good tire cleaner.

Aw hell...how long do you think it will take before that pic shows up on a Harley website with a slightly different story......

on tire, you're the judge of its being clean enough. if it doesn't slip...

there sure are a lot of give-em hell comments here. why not just talk to the service manager. i'd wager a small amount you'll come away feeling good if you leave the bush vs. the world attitude to the big guys

under your helmet, is that a small backrest? does it work for a passenger?

ride safe...

I was just wondering WHO was going to pay for the Hazmat clean-up? And that HAS to be some type of safety issue for anyone else using that roadway.

You at least want to get your costs covered by the dealer, including your entry fee into the rally.

Thanks for the input. I was a little worried about the tire but general concensus seems to be that it will be ok. I plan to talk to the owner of the shop. Generally the shop has an excellent reputation and I have been refraining from bad mouthing them until I see what their response is to the problem.

UHOH the back rest was made by garauld who is a member of this board. I am very happy with it and the price was excellent. If you search around you will find pictures of it on this board.
