On one of the other fjr sites there is listed a section called "Yamaha FJR 1300 Tuneup Specs" under oil it states a capacity of 5.1 quarts but then right below it, it statesthat capacity for "Periodic Oil Change" is 4.2 quarts with filter. My question is just what is the amount I should put in when changing the oil and filter as this is confusing to me? any suggestions? as this came from www.fjr1300info/tuneup.html

With bike on level ground on center stand, put in four (4) quarts, check the sight glass, add a little more if necessary.

:poster_stupid: Let the oil settle a bit and add the bit more as needed.

Or you can get more specific info in the bin-o-facts

EDIT: Or look at Ionbeams post right after mine. He was nicer than me and posted info .......

There is a difference between a total amount and a replacement amount of oil. The only time you would use the total amount of oil would be if the engine were new or totally disassembled and all the galleys, passage ways, nooks and crannies were drained.

’04 and ’06 Owners Manual says --

Engine oil quantity:

Without oil filter cartridge replacement:

3.80 L (4.02 US qt) (3.34 Imp. qt)

With oil filter cartridge replacement:

4.00 L (4.23 US qt) (3.52 Imp. qt)

’04 Service Manual says –-

Engine oil quantity

Total amount 4.9 L (5.18 US qt (4.31 Imp. qt)

Without oil filter cartridge replacement 3.8 L (4.02 US qt (3.34 Imp. qt)

With oil filter cartridge replacement 4.0 L (4.23 US qt (3.52 Imp. qt)

’06 Service Manual says –-

Engine oil quantity

Total amount 4.90 L (5.18 US qt (4.31 Imp. qt)

Without oil filter cartridge replacement 3.80 L (4.02 US qt (3.34 Imp. qt)

With oil filter cartridge replacement 4.00 L (4.23 US qt (3.52 Imp. qt)

This is the technical answer to the diffrence between the 5.18 and 4.23 fill volume, others will be along with the real world 'how to' change oil and set the correct level.

I'd suggest looking at the sight-glass and only filling to the middle of the sight-glass, at least initially. It's been reported many times that the FJR "makes oil". It's apparently a complicated phenomenon whereby oil gets unevenly deposited in areas inside the motor that don't fully drain. Whatever the reason, I'd recco not filling the oil level more than half-way (in the sight-glass) until you've acertained (by at least a couple little rides) that it won't increase and show higher in the sight-glass. jmho

I use the Pure1 PL14610, which is slightly larger than the oem filter. At change time, I simply dump in 4 liters of oil-which one could do with any filter that fits. Easy to measure, perfect fill quantity.
