Police searching for radar-sign thief

Published May 12, 2006
WHEATON -- The Wheaton Police Department is looking for the speedy thief who made off with an electronic radar sign used to keep motorists from driving too fast.
Police said Thursday the sign, mounted on a utility pole at Briarcliffe and Windsor on the city's south side, has been missing since April 13. They are asking for the public's help in finding it.
"We don't think it's a laughing matter," Wheaton Police Cmdr. Terry Mee said. It is intended, obviously, to be portable, he added.
The sign determines the speed of an approaching vehicle and flashes it to the driver. The one reported stolen is one of two owned by Wheaton.
The sign is white, about 2-by-2 feet and cost about $3,000.
Anyone with information about the theft can contact Sgt. Robert Lewis at the Wheaton Police Department at 630-260-2078, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-424-9119. A reward is being offered.
