What?

This is my first ride report.......this week.

A couple of weeks ago, I got off work at noon on a Friday, hurried home,

packed my gear, and hit the road. My plan, such as it was, was to pick up a few more

Oregon dams for the DamTour, and the ones I'd decided to visit were in

Eastern Oregon. Looking on a map, (freaky huh?) I determined that

the most direct route would be east into Nevada, out into the

desert to Winnemucca, and then "left" (north) up into Idaho.

It was early afternoon before I was on the road, but I figured

I could make it to Boise, bunk there, and go Damnabbing the next morning.

Let's go!

East on 80, out of the valley, and over the mountains.

IMG_3893.jpg

Nice country, up and out of CA, and into the our neighbor, NV.

IMG_3918.jpg

RenoJohn's skyline out there.

IMG_3920.jpg

Who hasn't ridden or driven this long stretch from Reno to SLC? I like to count trees as I ride it.

IMG_3937.jpg

Very late afternoon, and I've made it to beautiful Winnemucca.

IMG_3363.jpg

Always somethin' going on here.

IMG_3360.jpg

Now, it's time to go north. Hwy. 95 goes up into the corner of Oregon, and then veers east into Idaho.

This stretch has very few towns or gas stations, so you must plan accordingly.

IMG_3404.jpg

It's a really nice ride here, especially in the early evening. The Santo Rosa Mountains to the right, greenish gold

from the late day sun.

There is nothing more calming than to stop in a very remote place, turn off the bike, and look and listen to the solitude. And take a couple of snap shots. :D

IMG_3397.jpg

Gas in McDermitt, at the state line.

IMG_3381.jpg

IMG_3388.jpg

By the time I reached Burns Junction, it was dark, but I could make out the buttes and cool formations I

was passing. I must return to this area while the sun is up.

Just before midnight, I was on the outskirts of Boise, and decided I'd best find lodging. My "device" steered me to

a BW in Nampa. Food, most of a brew, and dreamland.

(About 530 miles, but I'd not gotten on the road till after 1pm, for cryinoutloud. I wish I was retired.)

DamDay in a minute.

Morning came. It always does.

On the road, and heading back west, looking for Owyhee Dam. It's on the Owyhee River, near Adrian, OR.

Rural America. Still in Idaho.

IMG_3412.jpg

And then back in OR.

Adrian.

IMG_3417.jpg

Getting closer.

IMG_4032.jpg

IMG_3420.jpg

Really cool area. And I'd never have discovered it had I not been DamTouring. Hey, I've been tricked

into riding my motorcycle all over the PNW.

IMG_4050.jpg

Cha-ching.

IMG_3427.jpg

IMG_3437.jpg

Back out and heading to Oxbow Dam up near Hell's Canyon.

Some folks engaged in some strange activity. They plobbly don't have motorcycles.

IMG_4071.jpg

The Snake River. Full of snakes. You can look it up.

IMG_3440.jpg

I really just kind of zoomed through this area. It was getting hot, and I wasn't feeling so..........hot.

IMG_3443.jpg

Almost to Oxbow...

IMG_4120.jpg

...and POW! Take that Shineypartsdown! Damn number SIX!

IMG_4132.jpg

Okay, time's a'wastin'. My next target was McKay Dam, near Pendleton.

So I'm planning on taking Hwy. 86 west to I-84, and riding "the slab" north to Pendleton.

But,.......I stop for gas here....

IMG_4133.jpg

...and I start chatting with one of this group of riders. I tell him I'm heading toward Pendleton, and he

asks me the magic question.

"You in a big hurry?"

I pause, unsure where this was leading.

"I don't drink," I lied.

He looks at me funny.

"You go up the road here, two-point-four miles, and turn up Forest Road 39. That'll take you all the way up to Joseph, and it sits in some of the most beautiful country in the whole state. It's a really twisty road, but

you'll love it."

"You've talked me into it.....and....I actually do drink, sometimes."

Okay.

39 turns out to be a really excellent route. Very twisty, deep forest, streams, no traffic - just what you'd think Oregon looks like.

IMG_4154.jpg

IMG_4160.jpg

IMG_4163.jpg

I take lots of pics of signs, to help me figure out where I was later.

IMG_4172.jpg

And down to Joseph. As promised, it's pretty nice up here.

IMG_3462.jpg

I hustle on down the road to Pendleton, realizing I was running out of daylight, and considering how far I

would have to ride tonight to make it home.

Pendleton seems to be sort of a cowboy town. I mean, that's how it looked to this traveler. I grabbed a burger, some gas, and ran over to McKay Dam.

I gotta say, it wasn't an impressive sight, or a particularly scenic area. But, it was on the list. And it counts.

IMG_3474.jpg

IMG_4181.jpg

Alright Silvia! It's about 7 pm, and an easy 700 or so more miles will put me back home. And I was already damn tired, having logged well over 400 miles since my day began in Idaho.

In retrospect (always say that before decribing a poor decision) I should have found a room, and gone home in the morning. But, that's not what I did.

Across the northern state on 84, and then down 97, aaaaaaalllll the way down to Shasta and I-5.

Long ride, for a fellow my age.

On the plus side, you can really make some time on 97, up north of Bend. Light traffic, good surface, pleasant countryside.

IMG_4187.jpg

Another small town in America. Grass Valley, Oregon, I think.

IMG_4195.jpg

Almost to Bend, and I'm out of daylight.

IMG_4204.jpg

When I stopped for a fill-up and bathroom break, a friendly local approaches.

It's Mooseonagoose, forum star and good fellow!

IMG_4206.jpg

We talked for a few minutes. He generously offered me overnight lodging, and advised me that

the forest creatures would be a hazard as I headed south. (Well, there's another thing I've got going for me!)

I explained that I was determined to ride on through and be home by sunrise.

I'm sure I heard him mutter "dork" as we shook hands and bid each other goodnight.

Well, it was a long night. No deer encounters. An uneasy stop in Klamath Falls in the wee hours, (a group

of not-so-promising youth lurking) and even a highway rest area/picnic table/didn't even take off my helmet/40-minute nap near Redding.

Sunrise comes early in late June, and I was still riding as I watched it.

IMG_4222.jpg

Hey Carver. I've got one too.

IMG_4227copy.jpg

And finally, crossing the Sacramento River, I was home.

IMG_4238.jpg

I slept for a couple of days, ate a lot of ibuprofen, and now I'm good as new.

This weekend, I went back to Oregon, and took another 500 pictures.

IMG_4254.jpg

And of course I'll be writing another RR on that little ride.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at this effort. I look forward to reading your comments.

Michael

Wow...you've been a busy boy.

I love these two photos in particular...amazing. I shake my head in wonder and awe.

I recognize all your shots around Hell's Canyon and NF-39 up to Joseph, OR. Griff and I did that area on the way up to the Rattlesnake Grade and Lewiston a couple weeks ago. Outstanding area...

Fantastic shots...look forward to all your ride reports. For both the outstanding photos...and the equally sly commentary. Now be a good man....off with you to bag a few more dams...

Nice job, Michael.

Always good, my friend, always!

Haul Ashe & I just did Hell's Canyon. Tasty. Got some great pics at the Hell's Canyon Overlook on the OR side. Well, got pics for my talent level.

What's your damn total now?

Yet another great ride report with great pics. I am not so sure about riding all night in deer country though. That does not sound like a very good plan because if you do find one I am sure you will not come out a winner. I've seen what they do to cars. but enough of that and you just keep up the great ride reports.

What's your damn total now?
Eight Dave. And they were the easy ones. Sheesh.

... riding all night in deer country though. That does not sound like a very good plan ....
It's was a terrible plan boomer.

But I was so drunk when I hatched it, I didn't consider the danger. :D

Kidding.

Seriously, it's not something of which I'd make a habit, but there are those times.

Most recently, CELLO II had a deer ruin his day and his FJR, and I was certainly pondering that

as I rode.

When possible, I followed other vehicles, hoping they'd work as cowcatchers. And when that wasn't possible,

I slowed way down, and turned the lights up.

A risky thing, no matter how cautiously you ride.

But, but, why do the forced march home when you had good company and free food/booze to eat/drink?

I too have been guilty of the 'march'..

but have soo much more enjoyed the moments of time where good company, unexpectedly, shined much to brightly to face a tired dawn.

Just a CBA perspective.

'course, if you had to get home to be back at work, then all is excused, and all CBA fee's and penalties, *this time* will be waived..

Nice pictures! There is some amazing scenery "tucked away" in the spaces of eastern Oregon. For your next ride report:

Why did you get off of I-5 in Medford, only to u-turn at Hwy 99 and head back toward the freeway? You were certainly concentrating; <_< you passed me near Rogue River and that yellow helmet never even twitched as I gave you the  . I "chased" you all the way to Medford, but I was under a bit of a handicap as I was in the company pickup. )

They're funny about that damn 55mph up in those parts.

Great report as always, but why the rush? From the looks of those sign posts, you're missing some nice side roads.

OM,

That must have been you on July 4 just outside of Florence, Oregon around 2pm. Blue bike, yellow helmet and stopping to take pictures. Who else could it be? You already mentioned you were in Oregon. Looking forward to the report!

(I was in my pickup going north headed home from a camping trip with the whole family.)

Yep, wouldn't be an Orygone trip without one of these pictures. Bastids!

Glad to see you're making progress on your dam count. We're heading to MT this coming Saturday to get the two there. Why don't you tag along.
I made it my entire trip, to, around and out of OR without one of those behind me. neenerneenerneener :p
