What?
This is my first ride report.......this week.
A couple of weeks ago, I got off work at noon on a Friday, hurried home,
packed my gear, and hit the road. My plan, such as it was, was to pick up a few more
Oregon dams for the DamTour, and the ones I'd decided to visit were in
Eastern Oregon. Looking on a map, (freaky huh?) I determined that
the most direct route would be east into Nevada, out into the
desert to Winnemucca, and then "left" (north) up into Idaho.
It was early afternoon before I was on the road, but I figured
I could make it to Boise, bunk there, and go Damnabbing the next morning.
Let's go!
East on 80, out of the valley, and over the mountains.
Nice country, up and out of CA, and into the our neighbor, NV.
RenoJohn's skyline out there.
Who hasn't ridden or driven this long stretch from Reno to SLC? I like to count trees as I ride it.
Very late afternoon, and I've made it to beautiful Winnemucca.
Always somethin' going on here.
Now, it's time to go north. Hwy. 95 goes up into the corner of Oregon, and then veers east into Idaho.
This stretch has very few towns or gas stations, so you must plan accordingly.
It's a really nice ride here, especially in the early evening. The Santo Rosa Mountains to the right, greenish gold
from the late day sun.
There is nothing more calming than to stop in a very remote place, turn off the bike, and look and listen to the solitude. And take a couple of snap shots.
Gas in McDermitt, at the state line.
By the time I reached Burns Junction, it was dark, but I could make out the buttes and cool formations I
was passing. I must return to this area while the sun is up.
Just before midnight, I was on the outskirts of Boise, and decided I'd best find lodging. My "device" steered me to
a BW in Nampa. Food, most of a brew, and dreamland.
(About 530 miles, but I'd not gotten on the road till after 1pm, for cryinoutloud. I wish I was retired.)
DamDay in a minute.
