I finally got Dad to get off that dang 883 hugger and get a decent rig. He bought the Hugger new during the big annaversary year (03?) and has only put 500 miles a year on it. He hates it. Every time I would ride my FJR over to his house, he would 'steal' it and go for a ride. Same when he came out to my house, first thing he would do is ask where the bike keys were

Finally he bought a touring rig. Since his budget is too tight for a FJR of any year, he picked up a nice '84 Aspencade. I haven't seen it in person yet, but he said it looks just like this:

Has anyone had experience with the 1200 'wings? How reliable are they? This one has had only one owner, 50,000 miles, dealer maintained. Dad has already put 400 miles on it this week!

MAybe now he will stop stealing my baby!!

Not to rain on Dad's parade but I have heard that the 84 is prone to stator failure and at about 50k. It's possible that it has already been replaced. Also it may never go bad.

Hope I'm not the bearer of bad news.

I will have to second the stator problem which was on all 1200 Goldwings (84-87). They usually went out at around 40,000 miles so maybe your father's has been fixed. It was a very expensive fix, about $700, because the stator was buried in the front of the engine and the entire engine had to be pulled in order to replace the stator. Honda never admitted they made a serious design flaw on the 1200 but the 1500 Goldwing had easy access to the stator.

Before I was an FJR guy, I looked at harley's. The 883 was almost 10k that year at my dealer. I'm just confused by these two statements together. If he sold off his '03 hugger, I would think he could get enough out of it to buy an '03 FJR.

his 883 hugger was $6k new. He has since added the 'touring' seat and passenger backrest, and still hates it. some guy from work is looking to buy it for $6500????? how bizarre.

his budget is tight because he also hates his S-10 and is looking at getting rid of that too and getting a real vehicle.

My buddy who is on his third Harley kept trying to get me to buy a Harley instead of the FJR. Hie argument was that iut really retains resale value. He claims to have sold both of his previous Harleys used for the same price he bought them new. I did take a look at the V-Rod and the Buells. Bought the FJR. ;)

First off he needs to get his priorities in line. Doesn't matter what kind of cage you have to drive as long as you have a FJR for a bike. :D

+1

I find myself not driving for weeks at a time, and getting in the car. It's a very odd sensation. One time I showed up to work, had been riding the bike for weeks, and first thing when I got there I had to go pick up a 25' rental truck. That was definatly weird. :notme:

I met a guy on my ride to Tahoe this morning. He was riding a GL 1200 Interstate and we talked. He has 143k miles on it and It looks new. He said it broke down on him once. The electrical/ignition system failed. Other than that, it is his love.

He said he would like a Road King. I bet he wouldn't.
