Hello,

This summer I have a ride planned from Southern Cali to Priest River Idaho. My route in Northern CA and Oregon includes the coast. I seem to remember this to be very scenic from a trip I took as a child. Am I correct about this? Is it worth riding the coast or can somebody suggest a better route? I need to go thru Portland on the way up and I don't want to backtrack to accomplish this so I thought the coast was a good solution.

Any comments would be appreciated!

It's a beautiful ride, and well worth it. It's fairly easy to hop over to Portland on any one of several routes depending upon how far up you want to go (or how much time you have).

+1 try to avoid the weekends on the Oregon coast if you can. Lots of traffic in certain areas.

In addition to the traffic, you can hit construction on US101 that time of year. Bookmark this site: www.tripcheck.com and check back to see what construction work is going on where. There are several areas, especially just north of Newport and south of Coos Bay, where the highway sinks and requires repeated repair (fill and repave). Overall though, great scenery. You can't beat the Oregon coastline.

Judging by your avatar I'd avoid the coast at all costs and head straight up hwy 99 so you can enjoy every dirty little s**t hole town the central valley has to offer.

Not convinced? Here's a good thread of the coast: Link

You'll definately want to stay away from Big Sur as evidenced by this thread: Yuk!

Have fun!

One of my favorite rides. Rode over to Bandon and down to the Cali border, then back up north inland on Monday. Great ride on a nice day in the off season. All of the advice above is good advice. When riding, make sure to be careful in town limits, the speeds are watched closely by local cops (for good reason with all the gray hairs and tourists).
