Panel A problem

I took panel 'A' (the battery cover) off of my 2008AE this evening, and noticed that the forward 4mm fastener (the one nearest the headlight adjustment knob) was loose.

If I recall correctly, there is used to be a nut glued to the panel A 'ear' for this fastener to connect to.

It's not there. There isn't anything for that forward fastener to bite in to.

Has anyone else had this problem?

The spring nut has fallen off. Yamaha Part # 90183-050A6-00 (item 79 on microfiche - Clicky). The spring nut is 4mm which you might be able to find at any automotive supply shop since these spring nuts or clips are commonly used for car body trim.

I had to replace one when I cross-threaded one a while back.

If you're so inclined, you'll find the old clip down between the outer right fairing and the black inner panel.... mine used to slip off because it got overtorqued a couple of times and broke a bit off the ear that holds the clip. Bought a new panel and squeezed the clip a bit before I put a new one on.

I got frustrated with the spring nut always moving around resulting in me loosing it or difficulting during reassembly due to misalignment (Note: My spring nut probably became worn more than normal due to the installation of an accessory shelf). To solve the problem, I finally put a very small amount of epoxy cement on the spring portion of the nut to glue it to the Panel A tab. I put the epoxy on just before assembly so that it would cure after it had been installed and properly aligned. It probably goes without saying but be absolutely sure you do not get epoxy on the threads or some day in your future will be a very bad day! I have never had a problem with the spring nut since.

Actually, my spring clip in that spot turned up missing about two years ago. One less set of holes to line up when putting the panels back on. Simplifying your life: priceless.
