I read in my local paper that a local marine was killed in a helicopter crash and that the Westboro Baptist Church is planning to stage a protest. The family has invited the Patriot National Guard to participate by riding.

Click here for more details of the ride and the mission statement of the PGR here.

I'm planning on riding.

Good for you Iggy. I don't know if you've ever done one of their rides but its a pretty gratifying, emotional experience. One word of advice if I might. There are generally a whole lot of inexperienced riders participating who don't necessarily want to adhere to a staggered line while riding so just stay on your toes. Don't forget your flag.

I'm pretty sure the local Harleys will be omipresent and having ridden on some mammoth toy runs I've found group riders pretty good around here. Guess I gotta find a small flag because my 5' x 8' will be a bit big.

Good for ya Iggymeister! Having only done one mission, my rookie notes are as follows:

1. Bring your flag - it helps.

2. Bring water with you.

3. Be prepared to stand, at attention and parade rest, for fairly long periods of time. My boots were killing me by the end of the day.

4. Be prepared for some emotions you may not know you had. During my mision, the mom walked by and personally thanked and shook the had of every PGR member. Damn near made me start bawling like a 6 year old.

5. I'm not sure of the 'rules' if there is one, but since I did not serve in the military I did not salute. Didn't feel like it was appropriate for civi to salute a fallen soilder; instead, I placed my hand across my heart.

edited to add #5.

Good for you Iggy!

You only salute while in uniform. Your hand over your heart is proper in Civi's.

The ride was today and VERY cool. I wrote up a blog and some pics here. There is also a local forum with a ton of pictures from the event.

Imagine this snake of a procession with 400 to 500 bikes!

Wow! What a turnout. There's one more family who knows that their son did not pass without the world knowing, or caring, about it.

I especially liked this part. Never seen that one before.

That is just AWESOME BEYOND WORDS!

I was detained by work and a bad back Sunday. I wanted to go but the wife couldn't drive me out to be part of it. I will be at future missions! My heart sank when I knew I wasn't going. It makes me proud to be an American and a Veteran to see all the support for our "Fallen Hero's". A Hero is someone that does the right thing no matter the person outcome. Our troops definitely fit that description!

The rest of the supporters are "Model Citizens" for the respect that they show.

Tru.
