Good Day!

Just out on A Pirelli Agnel for a back tire and was wondering if anyone else is running this tire as all the research stated good tire?

Also how may KM you getting out of them?

Thanks

I tried a couple sets of Angels. They are nice sticky tires, but don't last as long as PR2 or PR3 and they do not give adequate warning before they are completely used up. Not as sticky as the Diablo Strada that they replaced.

While the Angel may be my favorite front tire, the rear not so much.

Handling was great but I've yet to get more than 5K miles on one.

I had to replace the last one at 4100 miles as I was 1200 miles from

home and didn't want to chance it showing cords on a weekend.

It'd probably be a good choice for an FZ-1.

I had a set and got about 6,000 miles (9,600 kms) out of the rear tire on my Interceptor. I'd say I still had another 3,000 - 4,000 miles on the front tire. I'm guessing, but the rear tire went out quicker because I did about 2,000 of those miles on interstates - flat and straight, and the tire flattened.

I am currently running Angel ST on the front and rear.... and I love them !! They are sticky and I have confidence in them for the corners. They warm up fairly quickly and I have no complaints at all. I should get somewhere around 8000-9000 kms on the rear and I run the bike pretty hard (hard acceleration, fast corners, 2up riding). Next set I may consider the Dunlop RoadSmart 2. There are some really positive reviews for these. The main difference between the Pirelli and the Dunlop (from guys that have run them both) is that the Dunlops will let you know when they start reaching their traction limits. They are very predictable.

If you don't push the bike hard and getting the most clics out of a tire is your priority, then go with something else than the Angel. If getting really good traction at the expense of tread life is higher on your list, you won't be disappointed at all. My 2 cents.... :)

You can match the Pirelli Angel front to a Dunlop Roadsmart(-II) rear for a better mileage balance front-to-rear on the FJR. Even though as stated above, the Angel isn't quite the tire its predecessor Strada represented, the Angel is still one of the best front tires available for the FJR.

The tread pattern on the rear Angel, just like the current Metzeler Z8 and the old Strada, has no sipes in the very center of the tire. That can be a real problem for determining tire life in those last few hundred miles. Or you can do what I do and pre-drill 2-3 metering holes in the new tire until you learn how many miles/kilometers you can typically expect where you ride.

Overall the Angel rear rates LOW on the HaulinAshe-FJR tread/tire life scale as compared to other ST tires. The front Angel rates MEDIUM.

Michelin PR3 and Metzeler Z8 rate HIGH on my tread/tire life scale. You folks up north need to beware of these tires as cold weather approaches. Down here in the good ole South, we can run them into early December without worry.

Sorry, I rambled again!!!

2500 of our American miles. On a 3000 mile ride to EOM and back last year.

S76 and I both had brandy new ones and his cords were showing by the time he got to the dealer in Va to replace them. I swapped out mine the day after him because like Haulin said one moment you have 1/32 tread and the next the wires are showing.

I noticed my rear tire squirming while cornering under heavy acceleration at slow speeds. I think it was sidewall flex and I won't be trying another set.

Pirelli makes 2 versions of the Angel ST to my knowledge... there is a version with a stiffer sidewall for heavier bikes and that tire has an 'E' designation (they are slightly more expensive - like $15 more). That is what I am running and under maximum acceleration I cannot feel any issues with the tire.

Earlier I said that I had tried a couple of sets of Angels. The second set was the 'E' spec. It lasted a little longer than the first one, but not a lot more miles.

I like the comment a few have made about using the Angel front with something else in the rear. I may try that next season. I think I already have enough tires for this year.

I LOVE my Angels. Got a set to replace the POS Metzlers that were on it. I'm not a heavy guy and don't do a lot of 2up or do real long distance touring. They're sticky, and very predictable, I've been known to push it pretty hard cuz I live for the twisties in the mountains here in NM. I got the FJR for the comfort of being able to ride all day and still be able to tear it up in the mountains. Most of my friends ride sport bikes and they can't do the distances I can without paying for it. That said, I keep up with them in the mountains just fine on my "old man" bike with the Pirellis on it. I've got the "E" spec tire for the heavier bike and I've gotten 4k on them without any seriously noticable wear, but I'm rarely going straight and work the edges almost as much as the middle. I'll be putting another set on when I kill this one!

Please tell me what you mean about..."adequate warning before they are completely used up"... What type of warning, wear bars, feel, what??

Thanks, Bill

This has been covered in depth by our very own tire destroyer Mr HaulinA. The tire looks fine with 1/32 tread depth and a few miles later the cords are showing.

No wear indicators in the center of the tire. No steel belts to help you get home.

I've got less than 7K on my front Angel and it could go a little longer, but I'm replacing with a PR3. Ride mostly 2 up. Big problem was that it wore unevenly. Sides wore first. Got kinda "triangulated". And about 1K miles back it started resisting staying in the curve. Needed a little pressure on the bar to keep it from wanting to stand back up. Can't have that.
