It was a thank you gift from a soldier I served with in Iraq. He is a knifemaker and made this one special from the iron chains we used to tied down tanks on our trucks. Needless to say, I was floored when he gave it to me.

Davy:what I didn't mention is how you turn your underwear inside-out and it's like having a fresh pair. Didn't want to overwhelm him.

Jerry:

Yep, nothing but swine, hillybily rum and lightly-packed moto-bikes around here. But not everyone knows that. (half my trips and rallies I don't even have saddle bags on, the fjr is way too heavy as it is without adding more weight.

Mr light traveling man packing guns and adventure (aka 2006fjr):

With that route you will absolutely not need to carry fuel, you could likey do that route on a 150mile range and even spirited riding you'll have much more than that with the stock tank. You also will not need heated gear -I'm confident in that because 10days to do that route -tells me you're not putting in long days/late night riding. (but you'll have plenty of extra time to explore so that is a good thing with allowing plenty of time!)

Sounds like you're getting it all dialed in. Yes, provide the link to your SPOT tracking gizmo.

And, I'll meet up with you somewhere along your trip to shoot some guns and such with ya. Not sure which part yet. Looks like you're going through Lassen? ---I've got some GREAT secret spots once you get north of there along 89 that you'll need to check out. I'll be providing these via maps and waypoints . You'll be the hero of your group, they'll be praising you for your knowledge of such cool hidden spots and such. (i'm not kidding)

Also got some good tid-bits on the other sections, but I don't want to overwhelm you on your first major adventure in NorCA

cheers from reno ...John
Thanks for the info on the fuel and I could not seem to find any info on how spread out the gas station were and wanted to error on the side of caution. Everyone in the group is riding an FJR and last years ride involved 7 National parks over 10-days. These are a good group of guys and we would love for you to carve some miles with us and show us around. If you talk to Turbo Dave ask him if he would like to come too! I really like him and he would have a good time. The last few years I did not carry it and there were parts of my ride in the mid 20s during summer. On my trip last year we went through Crater Lake Nat'l park (on our way to Canada) and in the morning when we left is was too cold for a summer jacket and my wife made us turn around and go back to the room. Highway 12 going through UT I also got hit with low 30's late at night when heading fr the room. I might bring it just to have it just in case.

I am hoping to spend some quality time with Zumo 660 here this next week and learn about all of it's features before I leave. I have always carried paper maps and done just fine but I am a little excited about seeing what it is like riding with a GPS. Thanks Reno John and I look forward to putting in some miles with you. Bring lots of ammo.

Hey i just did two days around the middle of cali and I for got my everything shoes tennys not a big deal. If you need something they usually is a wally world near by.

Kind of off topic but after a 575 mile day ride up through Cedarville on Sunday all I can say is Fr*&kin CHP is out to write everyone in the state a ticket, twice. Been hearing stories of folks getting tickets for 60 in a 55. Seems they love the Lidar, seeing more LEOS using it all the time. May be the same down south, just passin' it on.

Oh ya, bring your fixodent for the lost coast hwy, it's a bit bumpy.

Here's a couple more thoughts. Shoes: bring a pair of Teva or similar sandals, the kind that strap securely on. You can hike in them, they look passable in a restaurant, comfortable with shorts. I even hiked a lot in Zion with a pair and forded a number of streams in them. Much less bulky than any shoes.

Jeans: they're bulky, don't keep you warm, take forever to dry. A pair of lightweight travel/hiking pants from REI or someplace are better. Are you wearing riding pants? They can go over shorts if it's warm. Wool pants, if you have them, dry fast, look good, and are much warmer.

If you find yourself "running out of toothpaste in Bulgaria," you definitely made a wrong turn a long way back. Follow my advice and you'll have room to bring two or three more guns.

I usually carry a Sig P220 and a Springfield XD9 with some extra clips.
Damn Bro! You don't f#ck around. You sure that will be enough firepower? If not, try one of these CLICKY. :assassin:

Sounds like a great time. My SO and I will be hitting many of those same roads on the way back from WFO.

Think enormous budget shortfall in Cali.

Pack for the best scenario and simply buy yourself out of any jams.

+1

Looking at the roads you posted, you will never be far from a store of some kind or a gas station, so don't bring all the "extra-just-in-case" stuff. If you are staying in motels, most of them have laundry available or a laundromat close by.....
