I am getting a little bored with all the snow and not being able to ride so I thought I would use this time to start planning some spring and summer rides.

One ride that I am planning is a day ride from Central Oregon down into Ca. I found this ride in the Favorite ride section of the January Rider Magazine. The loop takes off from Hwy 139 through Tionesta to Medicine Lake. From there to Bartle then through Dana, Fall River Mill, Adin, Canby and back on Hwy 139 to Oregon. Have any of you California guys been on any part of this loop? Is it a loop worth taking? Is there anything that is a must see that I don't want to miss?

The trip from my house and back would be about 500mi. Are the roads good enough that I can do the ride in one day or am I being a little overly ambitious.

It looks like this country is fairly high so I’m guessing snow will stay fairly late. What would be a good time of year for this ride? Any info from those that have been there would be great. Thanks.

I know this area well. I grew up not far from Mt. Shasta and frequently head that direction. A few comments:

-ya, not a bad loop ...not overly exciting, but not bad

-there are a lot of little roads/spurs that I would suggest to kind of add some spice and scenic interest to it ...however this might make it more than a day ride

* Head out to Pondosa (you'll see the road a bit east of Bartle)

* at the intersection of 89 and the Dana cut-off ...head down to Clark Creek Road and follow that around the backside of Lake Britton and Burney Falls. You can actually park on the backside of the falls and enter for free ....much better than going in the "normal' way. Also, clark creek road is pretty scenic and interesting.

* drop me a line if/when you do this and I can give you some other thoughts and more details on the above

-this time of year is kinda risky ..BE SURE TO CHECK WEATHER and be prepared for the worst. Bartle often gets slammed with snow, kind of a weird inversion through that stretch.

Have fun ....and as your trip gets closer please let me know and I'll put a map of good spots together for you.

Thanks for the info. This is what I was hoping to hear. If there is enough to see I can add another day or two to the ride. I just know nothing about that area and it looked like an area that might be fun to see that isn't too far away. I am planning to do this ride in late May or early June if all works out. What do you think? As the ride gets closer I will certainly let you know. Thanks for the offer.

I rode to Medicine Lake from Medford a few years ago in Mid May on my vstrom. I went through the Lava Beds on the way. Heading up to Medicine Lake there was much snow on the road. I made it to the lake through some cut tracks in the snow that some other vehicles had made, otherwise I would not have made it. The snow did alter my route as I had a loop mapped out but returned the way I came. I have not made a follow up trip to Medicine Lake.

A nice loop may take you from Adin over to Alturus/Cedarville, then up to Lakeview and then home through Silver Lake. My .02.

It would be a nice weekender. Enjoy.
