Anyone have the problem with right inner panels screw hole breaking (see pic)? Should I buy a new inner panel, leave it alone or try to repair it? The other thing is the little metal clip (Yammy calls it a spring nut) fell off and its somewhere in the fairing. I'm thinking its much easier to leave it in there and buy another spring nut. What would happen if I just button it up without the screw and spring nut and ride it as is (fix it before a long trip)? It seems to be fairly stable with the broken inner panel when the screw and spring nut in place but have not ridden it without the screw and spring nut.

That hasn't happened on my 2007. But it would drive me nuts if I didn't replace it. I'm pretty anal though about my vehicles!

If it were mine I would use some epoxy to hold a new spring nut to the inner panel.

The spring nut is supposed to float to allow for some alignment because the panels don't go together exactly the same way each time.

Edit:

That's exactly how I fixed mine some 30k miles ago.
Guess it doesn't matter then. James, have you had any problems getting the screw started or buckling/bent panels?

That happened to me, caused by over tighting, I put the spring nut back on and wraped with duck tape cut hole for bolt and tighten to just snug.

To understand, you wrapped duct tape around the broken screw hole in the plastic inner panel and then screwed into the nut spring and tape covered hole?

Is this a nut spring than I can only get from Yamaha?

By the way, I miss your old avatar. I laughed every time I saw it. My brother started a Facebook account without a picture of himself so I offered to put one on there for him.....your avatar!

When I rebuilt a tab (busted in half right through the hole) on my inner panel, I cut out a piece of stout sheet metal; bent, drilled, and epoxied it to the back (of the panel and broken tab) to restrengthen the entire area where I glued the broken tab back on. It formed like a skin underneath the tab and gave it as much strength as it had when it was new. I used a two part epoxy from Walmart, nothing revolutionary. Once it was all done, I slid the spring nut back over the top, and bolted it back together... This method enables the spring nut to "float" around a little just like it was designed to do on the panel when it was new. The only difference? the thickness of a piece of sheet metal on the underside. This method enables the repair to be really thin and really strong. I can tell you more about how to do this if you think it might be what you need.

Wish I'd taken a picture of the process. Oh well.

Gary, I may try your way if ahchiu's way doesn't work. I appreciate your response.

I ordered the spring nut from Mondak Motorsports but I'm ready to ride. It doesn't appear there is much stress at all in this area. Any harm in riding without it? The clip fell out and is somewhere in the fairing but I can't find find it. Any trick to find it?

Barry, try removing the screws & plastic rivets that holed the inner fairing to the outer fairing. Then carefully pry the two apart...the spring nut will probably just fall out. If not you might at least be able to see it, and grab it. This worked for me.

Thanks Joe. Part of the reason I haven't tried ripping fairings off yet is pure laziness and not knowing the likely area to look.

Thanks again.

Wow a lot of replies. I live on the east coast and we have tolls and use transponders.

They have a super strong velcro to mount them to your windshield. I might have a spare piece at home I can mail you.

velcro the inside where the screw goes it wont blow off.

I just had this same thing happen to me. I just ordered a new panel and spring nut from Stadium Yamaha, they are not expensive.

I have been driving it all over the place though without the screw and nut in place and it doesn't seem to matter the screw isn't there.

I wanted to replace mine because I have a dash shelf to put on and the support gets attached there. I just looked up the part numbers on the online microfiche and ordered it in.

Whats the part number for the spring nut? Mines gone too. Its a stressed panel and I bet alot of them break.

My '07 was damaged when delivered in exactly the same place. I dropped a replacement nut down into the maze but was able to fish it out with a magnet. There is enough of the original panel left to hold the nut in place on mine so if I'm very careful I can get the screw started. An epoxy rebuild would be the way to go if there is enough of the tab left on the original panel. I'm sure you could get by without one screw but it just doesn't look right and I know there is something wrong.

Gary, your way is the permanent way to repair it but I think I'll go the easy way out and get some duct tape after it. Thanks for offering to help.
