That says it all. About to do an oil change with the Mobile 1 108 filter, which is the small one. The filter I have on the bike (same one that came when I picked it up) is longer.

What's the length matter? Does it? Looking for a tech explanation.

The technical explanation everyone is waiting for will have to come from Jestal

While we are waiting I will speculate that the size depends on how much filter media is installed and oil capacity.

I can't imagine that an inch of length, converted to volume would make much of a difference. The Mobil filter might even have a better filter element than the stocker. It's been a while since I read the guys site that cuts filters apart and compares the insides.

Filter Study

It is fits, doesn't leak and YOU like it

Use it :)

Use the Pure1 PL14610. Best of the bunch, includingthe Mobil1, which should be the 110 if you insist on using their filter. And yes, there is a difference, more flow and less pressure drop across the filter if it has more exposed area, assuming of course that the extra length isn't just empty space.

Rad's got it... the 3.25 Pure One has better tech specs than most others. with the larger length -- you get more surface area to filter through. If'n you're changing regularly, I don't believe it will matter much if it's a 2.5 or 3.25" length filter.

The Pure1 listed also fits behind the Bill Riley HiWay Peg bracket, without removal of said bracket, if anyone is interested.

I had to take my bracket off to change my Pure1. It was close (a couple of threads worth) but the bracket had to come off. It's not like that's a big deal though. It adds what, maybe 2 extra minutes to a 10 minute job?

Just a little suggestion if anyone is interested. I found that the FJR uses the same filter as a 2003 Honda Civic SI with the 2.0L engine. I found this out because I used to own both (now just the FJR). It makes it easier for me because I don't have to remember the filter part number when I go to the auto parts store.

My VTX also used the same filter as my FJR. I just couln't swap manes on either bike. Yamaha on Honda, Honda on Yamaha. Just ain't right.

I checked with my wife on this length issue. She assures me that 2.5 inches is well worth the extra performance!

Anybody know for sure if the Pure1 filter works on all model years, including my '06? TIA.

I've decided I don't want to pay the dealership for oil changes anymore.

I just read what I posted yesterday. Feel free to call me on something that sounds that stupid in the future. Not sure why I thought that it would be easier to remember the car than the filter number.

spend the two bit and get the factory spec filter.

A little research on the subject will learn ya that the difference in oil filters is rather small if you change regularly. As previously mentioned Jestal has addressed this issue quite thouroughly.

FWIW I usually use the PL14610 for its lovely color but don't hesitate to use the ST7317 available at WalMart for about $2. Allegedly its the same as a Bosch without the pricey label.

Why spend $8 on a 'special' filter? That's half a tank of petrol ferchrissake.
