A Bessemer police motorscout was hit this afternoon by a minivan -- in which two people dressed as clowns were the passengers -- hurling him 50 feet.
The wreck is still under investigation, but Chief Nathaniel Rutledge said it appears that Officer Michael Goodwin was traveling east on 14th Street when the minivan, apparently turning left onto Fairfax Avenue, turned in front of him. Goodwin was talking when he left the scene, officers said. He was taken to UAB Hospital. Spokesman Troy Goodman said Goodwin was in the emergency room listed in serious condition.
"Thank God, he's going to be all right," Rutledge said. "He's going to be bruised up, but he's going to be OK. It looks like they clipped him."
It is unclear at this point whether any charges will be filed.
