I'm trying to do the thorough lube job because I'm installing the new Penske 8983 received from GPSuspension. First, let me express my frustration that the dealer tightened all the bolts in this area to the point I had to get a breaking bar to assist. I was screaming in the garage "Hey people, it's not the friggen' space shuttle here! 100 lbs of torque is ridiculous!"

To do the job right I need to take off the final two bolts to the center stand and lube the upper swing arm. Do I find a way to maneuver the exhaust or just deal with it next weekend when I have a new Dremmel?

With the exhaust off, it ain't that big a deal, supposedly. Obviously the centerstand went on first at the factory. Engineers don't give a rat's *** about service, only assembly. Without the exhaust, they're easier faster to assemble the way they are if you're a worker standing next to the bike as it passes you on the line, rather than going underneath to put the bolt in "backwards."

On my 08, the bolts were both in from the right side. I assume that this was to ease assembly, so they put both bolts in from the right the same way as it was going down the line.

At least on the gen 2, all you have to do is loosen the front bolt on the bracket that the center stand attaches to, and remove the rear bolt. This will allow the whole bracket assembly to pivot down far enough for the center stand bolt to clear the header.

I found getting in a position to be able to lever the spring on to be a greater challenge than the mounting bolts. Probably wouldn't be bad if you have a bike lift, but trying to do it laying on the garage floor was a sure a pain. Ten years ago it probably wouldn't have been so hard :eek:hwell:

Cut em off with a recip. saw, then put two new bolts in the right way! (what I considered right anyway)

I guess I just like doing things the hard way. I pulled the fairings, removed the silencers, released the down-pipes and then reversed the offending bolts.

I have heard that a lot of people 'spring' the exhausts to get the bolts out & turned the 'right' way.

The bottom line is you have to turn those little buggers! :angry2:

Don

I fought with those suckers for a good while to replace the center stand, until a wrench slipped and I took the skin off a couple of knuckles. Then Roseville Yamaha got the job ............... !

Now .... If I'd have thought out of the box

A 4inch cutoff wheel chucked up in my die grinder took the offending bolt head off (after loosening the bolt so that I could be assured of only cutting the bolt shank and nothing else). I used a generic bolt out of my shop supply to replace the bolt and then replaced it with a new factory bolt when it arrived from Gary McCoy (anybody heard from him?).

The Japanese design team's thought is, in case you loose yer nuts, the stand won't become entangled in yer rear wheel...

It's a liability issue...

I'm quite sure...

:)

Dang, rushes---That's the best idea of why they are this way I've seen. I, like most thought they were put on before the mufflers but you just may have it. Who would have thought! I did remove mine by just springing the mufflers down a little & then by putting a washer under the bolt head & red Loktite on a thinner nut. I did it the 1st year I had my new '04, on my air table & overhead hoist. I did have the bikes weight on the stand before tightening the nuts. There was a big scare that the factory wasn't greasing stuff enough. All my swing arm, links, dogbone, U joints were greased well from the factory. 65K mi & it's still my favorite. De :)
