I am finding with my day rides, I am ending up on dirt type roads for parts of the ride. Not dirt track, but dirt roads. While I handle them with my Feejer, it's clearly not made for them. Most of the rides are asphalt, but you never know when you're gonna hit the dirt roads. Again, it's a small percentage of the ride.

Which raises the question: would a bike like the 1200GS, or a Multistrada, do better with the type of riding I'm doing, and with those roads? And given that I love the way my FJR handles, accelerates, curves, behaves, am I giving up too much to get little gain?

(I suspect the right answer is to get a dual sport in the 650 range, but let's presume that I'm in a one-bike world if I want to remain in my house. Which I do.)

Comments from the assemblage would be welcomed.

Facing the same dilemma, I'm seriously considering trading my FJR for a Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere come spring.

Winter project?

Problem solved.

You're welcome.

I bought a KLR to accompany my HD last year. About 6 months was all I could take, it was just too anemic. I can't imagine how weak it would feel coming off the FJR.

Time to move, it isn't a one bike world.

Many of us came to grips with that years ago, now she needs to. It's only going to cost you some money to buy her off in some way so she'll let you get another bike.

What to get? Used Suzuki or Kawi 650's are less money (my gen 1 KLR is a great mule) or KTM for real performance and buck$$.

So far for me the FJR-FZ1-KLR is as close as I can get to one bike. She's got a horse- guess which costs more??

Recently sold my VStrom in hopes of getting down to one bike...not going to happen. A big shaft drive adventure is calling my name, either a GSA or the new Super Tenere. If you're committed to getting down to one bike, then one of these would be the ticket for 90% of the time. Let us know what you decide.

Thanks all. Having had a chance to sleep on it, I realized that my beloved Feejer really is the right ticket for about 95% of my riding, and that when I hit dirt roads, it's not by design, but by "accident" (fortunately, not the literally type so far). So, until/unless I do get a second bike (the Wee really does make sense for that), the right solution is do some better route planning.

It's also a lot cheaper.

Regards

I can't imagine how week the HD feels about now ;)
There is a bit of contrast in the performance. My Harley is not quite stock, though my mods have been aimed towards keeping it reliable and making gobs of low end torque. I really believe it would take the FJR in a 0-10 MPH race.
