POWER OUTLET IN GLOVE COMPARTMENT

What were they thinking anyway? You can't plug anything into it (radar detector) without leaving the top open ,or without cutting a notch in the top for the cord. Why wouldn't they put it in the dash somewhere?? Worrried about the 12 volt robbers?

Or -- i've read other posts (im still a waiter) that say there's a grommeted hole in the bottom of the compartment allowing you to route out of the box.

I think the hole you describe is a way to allow any water to escape, but could be opened up for a cable to pass through.

I'm happy to have it. The guy I bought my Goldwing from went behind the cubby, tapped into the line (essentially split it) with yet another cigar lighter thing, and plugged the car adapter to the XM into it...out of the weather, switched, ran the wiring to the spot he chose for the radio. I use the outlet in the cubby to charge the ipod and/or cell phone.

I checked several times yesterday, and never thought the FJR cubby got too hot to handle the ipod or the phone..

Whose going to be the first one that figures out how to disengage the trigger that turns that thing off when the lids closed?

Hmmm... Grommeted hole, eh? Just like my GL1800. Aux power cord ran through there for CD, MP3, etc. Iffin' it were a drain hole, there'd be no grommet to stop the water from flowing out.

I use the outlet for my cell phine and it works fine. Please note here that older models had NO power outlet, and now you folks are bitching that is has one. There is a knock out inside the cubby to re-route the wires, and there is a small panel on the left fairing that could be used to add something more...

You can close the lid over a thin wire without damaging it, but there is plenty of room to route wires from the inside of the left fairing that holds the cubby.

seems like the cubby will work out fine, and if ya needed to, at least the harness for the 12V outlet is wired, and could splice in and add more where ever ya wanted.

I put one in the fairing compartment on my Goldwing. The only thing I care about it for is a cell phone adapter, and I carry a tire inflator when I take trips.

I was told the same thing about my Goldwing. But I installed it and tested it and it works fine.

I am surprised at the limited amount of power on that outlet. Looks like it will only be useful for battery charging and limited electronic farkle power. Other than that the '06 folks with greater power needs will be installing wiring and connectors about the same as the rest of us. I wouldn't bother trying to tap off of that circuit for adding power outlets, though if it is switched it may be a good place to use as a control for a relay for other power that you want switched.

It was included with the bike so they could advertise that it's included with the bike. They hid it in an inaccessible spot so you wouldn't use it, and 3 amp'ed it to ensure if you did use it, you'd only use it once. Mystery solved.

you don't actually have to hve the key in the ignition to open the cubby door, by the way. Best to use two fingers, but one will do. Just press firmly and "deeply" and it will pop open. Learnt it from the dealer.

This socket is not a good choice for a battery charger connection. It's switched through the ignition key. You'd have to leave the ignition switched on while you're charging. The charger would have to supply all the key "on" loads plus the battery charging current. This would likely exceed the socket's 3 amp fusing.
