Hey guys, a fellow FJR rider told me about a third party (who also rides an FJR) who had been told that premium fuel ruined her engine. I don't know what happened to her engine but she was told by the shop that fixed it that it went south because she had been running premium.

I have been running premium in my bike since I got it and haven't had any problems. This is the first time I have heard of this and I don't see how it could even be possible. Anybody out there ever heard the same info?

[palm forehead]We all know fourth party reports of third party claims on forums are full of details and accurate to three decimal points.[/palm forehead] ;)

Why don't we just pretend we didn't hear any of this UNLESS somebody actually can quote the first party as to the specific reason (that I'm sure is ******** any)? Hmmmm....Okay?

No? Gonna swing at the ball anyway...lemme move the thread to it's new home. ;)

beemerdons uses premium fuel to wash down his Viagra for an extra little 'pick me up'. Or so he says.

And in the spirit of this thread...................KATOOM37 - Exactly WHY do use premium?

Answer in 1000 words or less, please.

Some of you guys gotta quit listening to these folks

Premium fuel wastes about a dollar, dollar and a quarter per tank, assuming 15 to 20-cent per gallon price difference. Why ya wanna do that?

If you've got the cash to blow, then use regular and Paypal me a dollar every time you fill up. Hell, I'll take half a dollar for it, you'll still be better off. So will I.

Hey, not just OP, but everybody who uses premium in their FJR, start using regular and Paypal me a dollar for every tank. Nothing changes for you, and I get some farkle money in exchange for sharing my wisdom. Fair deal!

PM me for Paypal address. :yahoo:

I use premium because sometimes when I'm trying to do 45 up a hill in 5th gear with a fully loaded bike pulling a teardrop trailer, it pings.

Well, who told ya to lug the engine like that? next time use a real gear . . . like 2nd. And hang on tight.

At the risk of revieling my lack of research into this issue.....

For my '99 BMW 528iT, using premium saves me money as the engine adjusts timing, and for the 5-8% price premium, I get 10-15% better mileage (ie more mile/$). I confirmed this over many tanks, and other users have reported the same. My only reason for stating this is that there are circumstances where an engine that doesn't ping with regular can still benefit from premium. What I haven't done is test mid-range fuel and see if I get the same mileage increase with 1/2 the price increase.

So, with that said, does the stock Gen II FJR have the ability to self-adjust engine timing to account for fuel differences. I'm presuming it doesn't. Would one of the aftermarket ECUs give that ability? Most of what I've read about aftermarket performance chips/ECUs adjust air/fuel mixtures/maps not timing, right?

[Riding home I thought more about this... doing timing changes to adjust for fuel would at a minimum require pre-ignitition sensors.. and if not built-in from factory, can't think you'd reasonably add them later.

Further curiousity - does the kind of engine mgmt my BMW performs require more than a timing adjustment? ie variable valve timing? in which case, is this a weight prohibitive technology for a bike? /end edit]

Just curious?

I use premium because I was told to by the dealer.

I couldn't even tell ya what a regular tank would do. When i hit the 25,000 valve adjustment we will see then. I don't believe I have ever put regular in the tank. It's suppose to keep the sloooooooodge out of the engine. Time will tell. Maybe I will have one clean burnin blown up engine one day. :glare:

chrisflock I think that is one of the reasons they gave the bike a 4th gear. Downshift and I assure you that you will save yourself some money. It has always amazed me that so many people use a higher grade of fuel than is recommended by the manufacturer. Being able to burn regular was one of the influencing factors for getting the FJR. I also have to wonder about a dealer that would recommend premium when it is not required. JMO.

Wow!

(Actually, I've had that multi-post thing happen when editing posts, so I know you didn't do it on purpose.) :D

Find another dealer. He lied to you.

None of the gas companies put stuff in premium to make it better than regular any more as far as cleaning or whatever. Premium is simply more resistant to pre-ignition so it goes in higher-compression engines.

I get an extra 40-50 HP with premium. I use butt dyno to calculate this. Yep, it's accurate. The bike totally screams with premium. And with regular it just putts along.

And Brooke Burke is my pillion.
