I now clearly see that I have to remove the top nut of the dapening rod, because that releases the spacer which I was mistaking for the dapening rod itself. So, using the soft grips and removing the top nut will release the spacer/washer/spring assembly.....Man, pics are great and I appreciate your patience in explaining. I should have just studied the photo more closely before.</p></blockquote><p></p>
