Real tire pressure monitoring

I use this ingenious cool thing called a tire pressure gauge. It's manual and I use it once a week. Works great no issues cost me about $10, a few years back.

That's part of our nanny state legislatures trying to protect us from ourselves. Instead of using common sense, we have little electronics we rely on. What happens when they fail.

It's unfortunate that many people don't know much about cars or bikes, I mean simple things like normal safety and maintenance items. After all those big bad SUV role overs some years back, most due to under inflated tires and extremely poor driving by over correcting, we now must have monitors on our vehicles. So what happens when we choose to ignore them? I guess the car should just not start unless all safety errors are cleared.

I seen a ad for this monitor on a BMW-MOA mag. I am thinking about it.. What makes this so simple, you just replace the valve cap, or mount them inside the wheel. It does not look like shows temp though.
$250.00 for the bike kit.

Hi, Smitty! I took a look at the owner's manual for the Doran system. IMHO, if the tire monitoring system doesn't also measure tire temperature (and the Doran unit does not), then it's junk to be avoided. I've been very happy with the Smartire system for a couple of years now.

• It measures both temperature and pressure, so it can give much more meaningful, corrected pressure readings while riding.
• Press the button on the display and it will run through pressure/deviation/temperature in turn for each tire.
• If temperature or pressure exceed a threshold, it can indicate whether a problem is in the front, rear, or both tires simultaneously.
• The internally mounted sensor is a plus, as it lets the valve core and cap keep doing their jobs of keeping the air inside the tire inside.
• The unit is cheaper than other offerings and available from Vulcan Tires for $169.

The only downside to the Smartire is that according to their website, "SmarTire is no longer actively soliciting sales and distribution opportunities for its motorcycle product." So it would seem that they are withdrawing their company from the motorcycle market. But they are still being sold in the retail chain and the company still supports their warrenty. I might even consider buying a second unit as a hedge against the day when they are no longer available.

I have 2 Smarttire systems installed on some of my bikes. They do work well though I had to make some minor mods to the battery contacts in the display to get them to work consistently. The temps are in centigrade. They do come with nice billet aluminum 90 degree valve stems. The batteries (non replaceable) in the sensors should last about 5 years or so.

(under $200) easy to install, too. I will report on it's effectiveness once have some time with it.

I've installed the "smart tire" system and I very pleased with it. It gives pressure & temps for each tire and has a warning light if pressure drops too low or temps get too high.

You can no longer buy this sytem, but you can buy automotive sensors to replace ones that get broken during tire changes or batteries have expired (alledgedly 7 yrs.). This was the best system IMHO, had it on my GL1800.

I bought the Kisan system to get away from batteries, and had issues, still trying to resolve with Kisan. I want something reliable with 90 degree valve stems..... Perhaps I'll go back to the SmartTire.

Sounds like the OP had a Kisan and didn't understand he could set it to display actual pressures, which display after the initialization and wheels are rolling.

I have been using the Doran unit for 5 years now. While it is true it does not tell you your tire temp, who cares?

You see pressure rise and that is all you need to know.

My LT ran 42 front and 48 rear. I saw max rise pressure of 5-7 on the front and 7-9 on the rear and that was consistent over 3 years on that bike. The differance was when I was 2 up or 1 up, or loaded for a trip.

A temperature don't tell me crap, it means nothing to me. If I know I am running 42 in a front tire and it is 55 PS that is a Ohh **** Moment and I STOP!

While I admire the Smart Tire System they are long in the tooth and a pain to put on, and then need to be avoided on tire change.

I have no vested Interest in Doran or Smart Tire but I do have five years experience with the Doran and it is first rate. It is very accurate and when it hits the set low points it is obnoxious letting you know about it on the light. They also can be mounted inside if you prefer and they operate flawlessly either way. They also come with quality metal valve stems both strait and 90's. One advantage is you can run a true tire sealant like Ride On with the Doran, not so on the Smart Tire, and of course no Dyna Beads with the Smart Tire if you use that product.

As to why and all that? I am cheap and for me to glance and see my tire pressure is saving my tires. I would not check my tires EVERY time I road. I know that. I never did. I hate changing tires and buying them more! And while I cant see my tire temp going down the road, I can see my increase PSI at a glance and that is enough for me.

I use tiregard with no complaints. Easy to install, has warning preset you can change for low pressure, and has temp. Have used this for years with no complaints mainly cause it's easier to hit the switch then check with a guage. Love TPS.
