Receipt checker at Costco

I've seen posts before about people who are annoyed when they have to show their receipt at Fry's or Costco and similar places. Well, today, I learned they actually look at them. Well, at least one of them does. My wife is walking out of Costco with a dozen or so items in her cart when the receipt checker keeps staring at the receipt. She starts wondering if I somehow stuck a big screen TV on the cart or something when the guy asks her, "Did you buy two jugs of cat litter?" When she says, "No", the guy asks her to follow him saying, "Well, they charged you for two." They walk over to the counter and she gets her $12 back.

She wanted to give the guy a tip, but he wouldn't accept it. Just another reason I like that place.

Ditto that! We just bought a new Plasma Flat Screen and noticed exactly 30 days later that our model went on sale for $150 off. We were told to just bring in our receipt and we walked out with $150 cash in our pockets, no hassle and they even had a smile on their faces while refunding the cash. Nice people and good policies, we'll continue to shop at Costco.

We purchased some food at Costco that was included in the huge peanut butter products recall recently. We received a call from them advising us of the recall. One less samonella bar in the cupboard. :bad:

 
I bought 2 NUVI 200s, 1 Zumo, and a backup Camera to get ready for the upcoming MC trip to NC. Very happy with their items and pricing. I'd love to get a 'retirement' job there, but in spite of the employee discount, I'd probably go broke! :p

 
I too have been a great fan of Costco until last week when this happened. Sometimes you never know how good a company is until you've had a problem. This is my story....

Recently, My boss asked me to assist him in purchasing a HD TV for his home. Mistake number one was for me to say "I'd be happy to".

Did some homework, and found a great deal on a Sony 52" TV for $1,599.00 at Costco. Best price I found anywhere. TV was online only order.

Convinced my boss this was the way to go, so I ordered the TV and it arrived about 2 1/2 weeks later. 2 guys drop the TV off at the house in the hallway, didn't even open it to inspect. OK, so I go over his house, open the box and and find the top left corner of the TV smashed. Hey, sucks but it happens.

I immediately call Costco customer service, give the woman the order number. She begins to inform me that it will take up to 14 days before they can pick up the TV and, since they didn't have any more of those TVs, she would have to contact the Costco buyer and wait for him to tell her what to do before she can get back to me. So she can't replace the TV. Finally, it could take up to another 14 days to receive credit on the broken TV.

This was unacceptable, I knew there had to be another way to get this resolved quicker. She finally lets me know that I could always take the TV back to any Costco warehouse for an immediate refund.

Off I go, dragging this big *** TV and right in front of the front door of my neighborhood Costco. Here I am thinking ok, I'll drop off the TV and pick out another one, set it up and I'm done, won't have to bother with this again.

My return was uneventful, got my credit, then headed straight for the TV department. Holy crap! They have the same model TV that I just returned, in a beautiful new box; however. the price was $1,799. Ok, I just work my way back to the customer service department and tell them I want to replace the broken TV I just returned with the shiny new one in the TV department, and I want it for the same price. This my friends is where the fun begins.

Over the next 1.5 hours I was told by 2 customer center clerks, one assistant manager, one warehouse manager and finally 1 general manager that they could not give me the tv for the price I paid online. One lady actually told me that they have manuals and procedures they had to follow and it wasn't that simple.

I can't tell you how many times I was told that although Costco online and Costco warehouses are the same company, they are really different.

At one point, the GM offered to split the difference with me and give me $100.00. I refused. Finally, I said to the GM, you know, I am 46 years old, I come to Costco approximately every 2 weeks and drop about 200.00 a pop. I looked at my watch and said, the way I see it is, I've got about 30 good years left. It would be a crying shame for you to lose all that revenue over 200 bucks and not doing the right thing for a customer.

It took about an hour and a half, but I walked out of Costco with a brand new TV in a shiny new box for $1,599.00

The way I see it is, this is just another example of what used to be common place in every day life; personal honesty.

Unfortunately, that seems to be an endangered species these days as folks gloat over how they "got one over" some other person or entity, without regard to the fact that it may have been dishonest.

It makes me sick to my stomach.

Numerous times over the years I've had mathematically challenged cashiers hand me too much change, and I would give them back their overage. Other people are stunned. Of course the clerks are appreciative (that's half the reward), but the better half is how I feel at the end of the day.

[edit] PS - I'm not a "religious" person, so it has nothing to do with that. It's just that what's right is right.

But, IMO society is drifting its way to the dark side (and I'm not talking about putting car tires on a murdercycle). Dishonesty is becoming the status quo. Here's a perfect example: There's an Ikea Ad that has been running for the past few years. Every time I see this ad it makes me sick for the rest of society that thinks that is acceptable and somewhat humorous. Well that and the woman is a freekin beast. ;)

There are of course a certain amount of dirtbag, lying, thieving, violent, ignorant, hateful, inconsiderate *******s out there, BUT, most of the humans we know and come in contact with are just like you and I, Fred.

Honest, kind, ....and good-looking. :D

You keep doing your best. You treat others as you'd hope to be treated. And you fight to remain optimistic. There's WAY more of us than there is of them. Way more. It's not even close.

Soap box is slippery. Off it. Don't know what got into me.

Lot of food samples at Costco. Some are tasty.

I don't know what's got into you either, OM. But you have cheered me up and made my day. So whatever it is , it is clearly good. ;)

And you are wise, in that there are always more good folx than bad. But damn, it sure doesn't seem that way when you watch the ***** box.

While I am impressed with Scott's original story about the receipt checker actually looking at the items, this tidbit doesn't impress me. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that you ended up saving money. However, Costco ...as with most sale items ...most likely charged that amount of money back to the manufacturer. They weren't being benevolent .... they were just giving you money from somebody else's pocket!
