This is a link to a recently released motorcycle braking rider behavior report Cicky

I like the definition of Sport Touring bike (by the way, it is modeled in the simulator as a VFR700)

Sport-Touring. “These motorcycles combine the comfort and some of the luggage

capacity of touring motorcycles with the responsive handling of sportbikes. Usually

powerful with relatively responsive handling, and high-performance brakes, sporttouring

motorcycles offer fewer amenities than touring bikes. The ideal mission of a

sport-touring machine is medium- and long-distance travel via curving roads.”

I like this from the abstract.

...Emergency braking behavior wasanalyzed based on two scenarios involving an opposing vehicle moving rapidly into the rider-subject’s lane,

requiring rider-subjects to brake in order to avoid collision. There were no cases where the rider-subject used

only the rear brake, though some riders used only the front brake. Analyses of event outcome indicated that a

rider’s initial braking, with respect to both timing and magnitude, is important in determining the event outcome...
Duh.

1) React quickly.

2) React properly.

It may save your life.

It's early spring in the midwest, lots of new and rusty riders out there learning and relearning techniques. Do it right...and you may yet live...when placed in a tight spot.

EDIT: My son and I rode his XJ600 last Sunday(my bike is still in offline) to the local junior college to practice tight u-turns, figure 8s, right and left circles, panic stops from 20mph initially. It was good practice for me...I was surprised...but not shocked...as to how rusty you can get over the winter.

My son was pissed that I could do tighter circles on his bike than he could. He went out the next day without me to practice.

Heh, one day I went to lunch with a friend on a Sportster. As we were going through the parking lot, we passed a nice space, so I said "wups" and slammed the FJR into a quick 180 and got the spot. The friend was pissed that he had to go to the end of the row to duck-paddle through a huge slow 3-point u-turn.

"But your Sportster's half the size of my bike" didn't win any points. Neither did mentioning I didn't have to put my feet down.

Thanks 'Klunkshift' -- that's quite a report (222 pages, thankfully there's a few pictures and lots of graphs...). There's alot of info in there -- more than just about braking.

Yea..., a 15 year-old motorcycle (a type they don't even make anymore -- and, not a great seller, in America, either... :( )

The "study" focused on "conventional" brakes -- that all may be rendered moot, these days? :unsure:

(with 'linked' ABS) In an 'emergency braking' situation, won't most riders just "mash on" whatever brake and let the 'ABS computer' sort it all out...?? :blink: :unsure:

Not on the lower end and older bikes...lots of them out there.

Not on the lower end and older bikes...lots of them out there.
I'm pretty sure ABS will soon be "Mandatory" on motorcycles... (along with other electronic 'nannies' they've thought-up). :(

That may necessitate 2 licenses/endorsements -- one for "modern" bikes and one for "old-fashioned"...? :unsure:

If they do this, then they are only one step away from seatbelts and airbags and "safety roll cages" on bikes. I don't see it becoming that political as loud pipes or lane sharing.

They can't even legislate talking on the phone while driving...so I don't see the mandatory ABS thing happening on 125s.

I think I saw the AMA rag mention the NTHSA made noises like this, and the manufacturers said "if we have to add a couple grand to the price of every bike, then we'll just pack up and go sell in India instead"
