I've been looking around for a used FJR and am hoping to be able to get a nicely priced Gen 2. I often come across bikes that have been dropped on one side and have scratched up farings or saddlebag covers, and these bikes are obviously priced lower to reflect the damage. I haven't yet looked at the cost for replacing faring panels, saddlebag covers, and mirrors but I'm wondering if there are any local shops that do a good job of fixing up these damaged bikes. I'm guessing that it would cost less than replacing the prts with new ones.

I live in Temecula, so "local" can be anywhere within a 100 miles or so.

Thanks,

Rick

You can give a call to service counter at NCY Motosports in Escondido. They had my right bag repainted, and the business that they used did a good job. I don't know who they used, but I'm sure they would give out the name.

Thats how I bought my 2005. It had only 2000 miles on it and had fallen over. The previous owner had done more damage trying to get it up but it was obvious that it was not a major accident. I used this as a negotiating point and simply deducted the price of a new faring from my offer, which he had difficulty arguing against. When cash allowed, I simply replaced the faring which came already painted from Yamaha to match the year of the bike.

Best of luck.

Thanks. I'm going to give them a call. I now have pictures of a bike I'm looking at.

You might also want to check in with Forum member garauld, who sells color-matched racks for all years of FJRs. I know he paints hard bag covers, but don't know if he's willing to do other painting work, or if shipping all the parts to and from New York would be a deal-breaker. His workmanship is first-rate.

Thanks. I've read about Garauld and there's no doubt that his work is first rate. I think the distance the the large size of the pieces makes it unlikely to be economically feasible.

Rick,

What year and price range are you looking for in a used FJR? It sounds like you're looking for a project. Why not another Honda ST. Your last one was nice.

I'm on the fence on whether I should sell my '08 FJR. I don't really use it anymore. It's been a while since I've ridden with Fred, Dana, and Byron from the ST-Owners crowd.

Happy hunting,

George

Hi George,

As much as I liked my ST1300 I wanted to get something different this time. I used to ride an FJ1200 before the ST, but I thought the ST had better comfort for my wife than the new Feej 13, which is why I bought the Honda. Marilyn rarely rides any more, so I thought it would be nice to shed a few lbs and get a lighter bike this time. The weight was my only real complaint with the ST.

When I posed the question about painting I was talking to a guy that had an '07 FJR for sale in Tucson. It had been dropped on the right side (no sliders / crash bars) and had some minor damage. Looking at pictures I didn't think it merited changing out the tupperware and saddlebag cover, other than the mirror. The guy met me in Gila Bend yesterday and I bought the bike. Turns out that they are pretty minor scratches that I'm not going to worry about for now.

I do most of my riding with Don (Maldos) and Joe (JoeCA43) from the ST-owners site. I do ride with Byron, Dana, Fred and others from time to time as well, usually to meet up for a RTE (Ride To Eat). It will be fun having a different bike than them! The ST group has an annual BBQ event at our house each summer, which we'll likely do again this year. I used to organize some rides, but don't really do that any more.

Now I've got to wire in my Autocom and get used to the bike. I only rode it briefly yesterday and thought that the front end handled very differently than the ST. Seems to want to fall in to the turns once initiated to the point where I have to apply a lot of opposite pressure on the bar. (It has the Helibar triple clamp riser system on it, which may be affecting it.) Anyway, I just need some time on the bike.

Thanks,

Rick

Sounds like your tires are working against you. I had the same symptoms as you describe with my stock tires. What tires are on your bike? I am extremely happy with Michelin Pilot Road 2s on my FJR. The handling with the PR2s is as different as night & day. Give them a try.

George,

I mis-characterized the symptoms I'm having in turns. (I ran some errands so I have all of 20 miles on it now!) It's different at low speeds versus higher speeds. At the higher speeds it seems to want to upright or straighten itself out while I'm trying to hold a turn, requiring a fair amount of constant force to keep it laid over. I find myself sort of zig-zagging in the turn as it straightens up and I add some force to counter it, and repeat the same a bit down the road! (The Honda with same tires had a much more neutral feel.)

At parking lot speeds it's quite different. It seems to want to fall one way or the other. Very manageable though. This may due to light cupping on the front tire.

I'm wondering if I have some adjusting to do, or if there may be something going on with the front end or tires. It has a Metzeler Roadtec Z6 on front that is pretty worn out, and I'm running it at 40 psi. Only about 15% tread left and some light cupping. Back Z6 is in great shape with about 75% tread left.

I've heard good things about the PR2s on the FJR, but I'm not sure if I want to run a mis-matched front ad rear. Maybe I'll try them the next set when I replace both. (The Z6 front / ME880 rear worked real well on the ST1300)

Comments welcome! (Looks like I've hijacked my own thread!)

Thanks,

Rick
