I wanted to take the panel over the battery on my 06 off. I am not sure how to get the little plastic pop rivet attachment off. Do I just pry on it and it pops out? I started to do that and it seemed like the plastic of the panel was going to crack before it popped out.

I am going off of whats on the 03-05 FJRs as I have not seen the 06 yet, but.............

There are three types of "fasteners".

Two have a phillips head screwdriver type slot that needs to be turned for the fastener to release.

And there is one fastener that has a little center "button". To relase that fastener, punch in the center pin or button with an allen wrench, or small screwdriver, or whatever. Now the fastener has been released and will come out, but it will still take some work sometimes to pry it out. To re-insert it, push the pin back so that it is sticking out of the fastener, re-insert fastener, and push the pin in so that it is now flush just like when you started.

Voila!

Yes getting those out can be a pain.

You have to reach underneath and push out the sharp tip of the fastener about 1/4 inch.

This can be painful, as some of them are very stiff.

Once it pushes up, the whole rivet will then push out.

Some of them (at least on the 06 are fragile and will break).

If the sharp tip does not want to push through the fastener, try a thimble.

I found new fasteners at Autozone to replace the broken ones.

Seems to be a little more difficult than on the earlier models from what people imply.

good luck

Au contraire mon ami!

Thilly guy, you are supposed to push IN the little pin from the outside. Dang! You must of had one hell of a good time doing it your way.

Mine was a piece of cake to get out on my '06 since the dealer must have lost it when they took it apart to hook up the battery....

..ok snowball, I'll admit my mistake and your way is easier.

after you get it out, you may want to change it to a riv-nut (threaded insert that 'squeezes' in the original hole), and a machine screw. I haven't had good luck with the little plastic thingies (the technical term for them).

I don't have mine yet, so I cant look at it. You could also use a clip-nut (springy steel clip that will receive a machine screw)

Good luck -- I replace the thingies.

I ordered about a half dozen of all the different fasteners on the bike, IIRC, there are about 5-6 different types.

Now if, um.. "when", I lose one, no big deal.
