I bought a 06 GSX-R1000 a few months ago and the FJR has been a bit neglected lately so I thought I'd take it on a trip from Boise, ID to Fortuna, CA for the 06 ST.N WCRM.

Well it rained damn near all the way over there, it rained damn near the entire time we were there, and it rained the whole day we rode almost 800 miles back to Boise. And I had a magnificent time aboard this wonderful machine the entire time. Well maybe not so much coming down this steep **** in the rain on highway 3. That was hairy.

There is certainly something unique about the FJR. There was some tight stuff on highway 3 in California, and again on highway 1 over to the coast and the FJR impressed me. And on 299 there were these lovely sweepers that I couldn't get enough of. Hell I didn't want to stop for lunch!

Great frickin bike is what I say.

Here are some pictures for fun.

Great pix XLR8!

The lost coast ride is a real jewel and not many people travel this route and Hwy 3 is alot of fun. I love to do rides in that area.

Think I'll start planning another trip up that way soon. :p

XLR8,

Great pictures! Thanks for the post. I've been tossing around the idea of a trip up that way. After seeing the pictures, I may change my route to include some of the same.

XLR8:

I'm curious about your purchase of a GSX R1000.

Typically when you have one type of bike, you would then purchase a totally different one for different riding situations. Like if you had a Gold Wing you might purchase a GSX R or Busa or something completely different.

Why the GSX R1000?

I would say that the GSX-R1000 is totally different from the FJR1300. :D

Don't you agree? They are really different bikes and the GSX-R or other SB is the perfect compliment to the FJR. One makes me appreciate the other even more. When I hop on the GSX-R after riding the FJR, the GSX-R feels like a toy it's so much lighter.

I've been thinking about a "toy" bike to compliment the FJR too. Recent reviews have raved about the GSXR 750 and Triumph 675. XLR8, did you consider these or other bikes before settling on the GSXR 1000?

Yes I did. I went back and forth between the GSX-R750 and GSX-R1000 in the showroom for well over 2 days. It was a very difficult choice because the 750 would be such a little mountain machine and it has adjustable pegs and that cool projector headlight. :)

I almost purchased the 750 but decided to go with the 1000 because whatever I purchased I would be doing day trips on, and some of my day trips can crest the 500 mile mark (yes it hurts but it's fun!) and I thought the liter engine might be better for that. I also wanted the excellent torque curve the 1000 has. It's really incredible! And it's quite easy to ride if you want it to be.

I also went to look at the 675. I weigh 185 and 5'11" and I found it too small. I actually fit on the bike fine but it just felt too small and strange.

When I climbed aboard the GSX-R1000 I had a feeling of confidence and I felt as if I was sitting down in the bike rather than on top of it. And then I read MCN's review of the 1000. Sold! :)

I should mention that for me the 05, 06 GSX-R feels great. I think it was years previous that had me thinking I'd never consider such a torture device.
