My wife and I are headed to Hawaii next week for our honeymoon. I'm looking forward to it. We were married at the end of May, but thought it was stupid to take a Hawaiian vacation when it was getting nice here in Michigan. (Lucked out there too, since I lost my job the very next week after getting married.)

Anyway, so we'll be in Hawaii for 2 weeks, and I want to rent a bike if possible. The problem is all I've really seen are Harley rentals. Those bikes just aren't my cup of tea.

So I'm looking for alternatives. I did find one Goldwing rental place (https://www.wingtourshawaii.com/), which would be fine. It's just a little pricey. I guess what I'm looking for is probably a guided tour for a couple hours. An 1800 Goldwing would be sweet, but not a requirement. It could be a sport bike. I'm not planning on spending a whole day, we've got plenty of stuff to do. But a couple hours touring some of the best scenery in the world on two wheels could definitely peak my interest.

Anyway, any advice or suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

A lot of the places that rent harleys also rent 1 or two sport bikes. Give them a call and chat with them. I was just there twice last year on Oahu and there was a place by my hotel that had scooters, harleys and few sport bikes. I don't remember the name of the place but it was in Waikiki.

Thanks,

Tim Maui has Harley rentals right in Kehei on the main road. Good riding around the island from old Wailuku Town around through Lahaina,to Kehei. Good cliff roads, curves one lane bridges, etc. Beautiful scenery. I have done it many times.Enjoy it.

https://www.islandriders.com/ On Maui, I have used this outfit twice. They have an office in both Lahaina and Kihei, will pick you up from your hotel. Harleys are the most commonly rented bikes in the Islands. When I lived in HI for six months in the late 80's working as a pipefitter for Cosco Fire Sprinklers out of LA, my only transportation was a used Honda CB550F.

Island Riders Inc. only rents Harleys. I rented V-Rod's from them and had a ball. Also rode out to Hana. Very nice people!

https://www.bigkahunarentals.com and https://www.cruzinhawaii.com Big Kahuna rents Yamaha YZF-R6 and BMW roadsters.

Both times I rented from these outfits I rented Road King's. Had a lady friend both times, and the big dresser was just fine!

You could have done that at CFR last June! :p

Check with the harley rental places near where you are staying. As has already been stated, they often have a sportbike or 2.

Sorry, I've never looked into 'Guided' tours so can't help you there.

Congrats on the marriage thing! Enjoy your trip.

If you go to Maui make sure you take the trip up Haleakala. 33 miles to 10,800 feet IIRC. The shortest ascent to that altitude in the world. Some serious twisties! the ideal trip would be before sunrise, but anytime you go up the view is magnificent.

been there done that, rented 4 bikes on maui, they tried to stick me with princes bike from purple rain, ended up of a fkn harley fat boy,pos but still fun.head north and keep going, road turns into 1 way cart path but paved and awesome.

Bill I really think you need to look into one of these.

Buenos dias y Aloha, mi Amigo djbill: Bill, don't be too quick in not considering a day ride on Kaua'i! You can see the whole island's roads in one day, but it can be an outstandingly fun day. I was solo for my day riding Kaua'i and I rented an H-D Sportster 1200 for just one day from these folks: Kauai Harley-Davidson/Buell 3-1866 Kaumualii Highway, Lihue HI 96766.

https://www.kauaih-d.com or 1-808-241-7020 After picking up the Sporty from Lihue, was staying at Poipui Beach, rode out past Mana to Koke'e State Park. Then back to Kekaha and up the dead end road to Wailua Falls. Then back on Highway 50 to Highway 56 past Hanalei to Na Pali Coast State Park. At this point you have ridden every paved road available on Kaua'i!

If you're staying in Waikiki there are several places to rent bikes within walking distance of any of the hotels there. You can call ahead or just walk around and see whos got what.

I've rented from Cruizin Hawaii a couple times. You can go for half a day or all day. They have a little tour map for you but it's a no-brainer that you must take the coast road that goes most of the way around the island. It starts right there in Waikiki so it's easy to get on and it's simply spectacular. No real twisties, just a laid back, relaxing, beautiful ride. It's just right for one of the bigger Harleys especially 2-up. You'll kick yourself if if you only rent the half-day. There's plenty of stops you can make along the way, waves and surfers to watch, and cool places for lunch and beverages. Head out first thing in the A.M. and just go! It's a ride you'll always remember!

I had a good experience when I rented a BMW from Chris @ big kahuna rentals in Waikiki. Super nice guy and no problems with the bike.

Just stay out of the Honolulu rush hour.

Oh yeah.... when I left in 2006 the traffic was bad. My friends say it's now a lot worse.

Morning rush hour is about 6 am to 9:30-10 am, evening form about 3 pm to 7:30-8:00.

dont' let that bother you. You'll be going the opposite direction of rush hour traffic most of the time anyway.

Don't plan anything else that for that day. there are tons of great places to stop for lunch and dinner.

Bring jackets, it will pbly rain in the late afternoon. Also sunblock.

Breakfast is always buffet at whatever hotel you like for the day...<G>

Best bargain for food.

Have fun!

Aloha!

johnny,i fail to see the humor in my english writing faults...lol. this will be our 8th time to kauai.i ride my fjr on 4 or 5 trips(ie cfr,sf with slo poke johnny and set up going to eom in 2010 and england with richard and beemerdoms in 2011) and she gets to go to the islands.we are all whipped in our own way.

I was able to rent a BMW 800 Dual Sport. If had more room in the garage the BMW would be in there. If you are interested I'll look through the old bills to find the name (Big Kahuna's I think) in Waikiki.

You have to have Loco Moco for breakfast. You just have to.
https://www.zippys.com/ Bill and John, Do you guys like Zippy's Restaurants as much as I do? I discovered Zippy's when I was working in The Islands as a Pipefitter. Now when I travel to Hawaii as a tourist, I must have my daily Zippy's plate lunch!!!

Hahaha! I spent 10 minutes looking for that language on Google Translate!

Been there done this too. Stayed at the Hilton Wai kiki. Rented a Harley. Once you are out of the city the speed limit is 45 max, no sense in renting something that is any faster. It was confortable and made it around the island on a tank of gas. Will have to state that it was an awesome way to see the island. Something about being in that open air. We took our own helmets and jackets.

Here you go, DesignFlaw06. Helmet cam ride starting off in Waikiki, windward up to Kane'ohe!
