Mods: feel free to move this to wherever, I couldn't determine a "best spot" for such a post.

Okay...

There has GOT to be someone out there in SoCal that can/will repaint an FJR for less than it would cost to simply reskin one with new parts from a discount dealer.

Come on, folks.

I'm sure Garauld is great, but shipping stuff to NY and back makes that a little out of the practical.

I'm talking a full tear-down of body parts, drop off at painter, he/she preps and repaints them (color yet to be decided), I pick up later and put them back on myself. The last quote I got looking around on my own (I kid you not) was $4k. WTF? I *really* had to contain myself to act professionally enough to thank him for his time, pack up my stuff and leave.

(pulling out bullhorn)...CALLING ALL PAINTERS.....CALLING ALL SOCAL PAINTERS....

Awwww, c'mon. Buy the spray equipment and DIY. If you're not planning on doing anything exotic like the rising sun or such, it should only take time and patience, no? :)

FWIW, long ago in one of the motorcycle rags I did see a bike that had been painted in the pattern of the Japanese rising sun (flag). Pretty cool, IMHO, though a quick Google turned nothing up.

Man, I share your dismay. Last year, I explored the possibility of repainting my '05. I talked to several local guys who have a good reputation for doing quality work. I got quoted prices from $2600 to $3800.....single color ( very expensive paint ) with me doing the disassembly and re-assembly. For kicks, I also got a quote from one of the East Coast's most renown painters, from down around the Daytona area, and he wanted $5800 and could have gone MUCH higher if I wanted to get fancy. HOLY ****. I never realized just how much I really like Galaxy Blue.

Great idea, too bad I live in an apartment complex with no garage and no facilities for doing such activity. Not everyone has a house with a shop/garage or access to one. There's a drawback to everything, including living 5 minutes from the beach and from work in one of the nicer areas of town...no facilities!

Heheheh....got a ground floor unit? Or upstairs but can drag the ABS & tank up there? Set up some PVC tubing and plastic sheeting to create a cubical work area. (Obviously: Wear a respirator.)

Just don't let your on-site manager see it.

P.S. Where in SD are ya? I used to live in San Carlos, Solana Beach, & Escondido.

Hmm...I got quoted $900 from California Auto Body & Paint in Sacramento.

I take some of my mechanical work, the stuff I cannot do myself, to a place near where I live, Poway Motorcycle. They are good! Now they don't do any painting, but I have seen some cracked up bikes in there. If you call them I'm sure they might have a good reccomendation.

Rick

Thanks Rick, I'll try them. I'm suprised at how many dealers are baffled/clueless when I ask them about painters. Fun Bike and House of Motorcycles both here in SD responded the same, "Gosh, I'm not really sure, we just deal with the stock stuff and don't really deal with anybody that does that." The Harley shops directed me to a dude up off Balboa that quoted me the $4k...right....

And to answer double, no, just plain not a viable option, dude. I live in Mission Valley at Archstone Presidio View (link HERE). I have a pretty nice 3rd floor apartment, far from the parking spaces and not suitable to wheel my bike into my apartment. The mechanical work I *am* able to do I do up on the roof of the parking garage with all my tools schleped in a backpack (and if I've forgotten something, a 5 minute walk each way to get it). No power, no storage, nothing but hand tools and laptop PC for the PC3.
