I retired as soon as I could, 61.9 yrs old, in February and bought a house in Lenoir NC so I could ride the mountains to my hearts content. Lenoir is a lesser known town (read: cheap real estate!) SE of Asheville, a few miles from Boone and Blowing Rock. So far this place is paradise - within minutes I'm on some of the best roads in the country and the scenery is spectacular. Here are a few pics from general riding around and a video shot this morning. It's my last ride until next week because I'm laying low for Memorial Day Weekend. It'll be nose to tail Harleys through Monday.

Anybody in the area who wants to hook up some time send me a PM! I ride at least twice a week.

Elk Creek Road. FJR's love gravel and that's the end of it.

Upper Linville Falls Had to do a little motorcycle boot hiking for this one.

Elk River Falls And, a bit more hiking involved. Worth it though - it's off the beaten track so there aren't touristy guard rails. It's a simple matter to plunge to your death from the top of the falls.

Boring *** 5 Minute Ride Video The upper part of NC-80 from the Blue Ridge Parkway to Marion, AKA "The Devil's Staircase", "The Whip" or some such. Whatever, I had it all to myself this morning.

Very nice video. Sux to have to ride a nice curvy road in all that sunshine. :D

I'm not retiring, but we'll be FJR "neighbors" in a couple of years as I move to upstate SC in 2014.

Beautiful country. Thanks for making me jeal... er, thanks for sharing.

Congrats on the retirement. My cousin and I ran into you and Ashe up on the snake a year ago we were both on fjrs with lots of camping gear remember? I will have to let you know next time we are coming up your way. Nice pictures. You chose just the best area. I have a house up in Spruce Pine I never get to use because it is rented out oh well maybe someday. Im jealous. You can just wait till the sun is warm to get out of bed anyway congrats.

I always enjoy RRs out of my own area, just to see the view, so thanks. Enjoy your retirement. I love that lush green foliage, although I know you pay for it with plenty of rain and humidity. Beachy--very economical use of punctuation. :p

That's great country there. I'm jealous. My wife and I went to the Bristol race a couple years back and stayed in Asheville. I wouldn't mind moving back there at all!! Be wishes on your retirement!!

Rick

Your basically me...in 20yrs or so! Me & my wife get up to Western NC quite a bit. It is paradise! The mountains are in my blood and I think of them often. We are planning to move/retire up there as soon as all the kids are out & on their own. Your in a terrific location. NC-80 is awesome & so is 226A so is...any paved road up there. I'll be riding on the BRP on Memorial day.

Enjoy your retirement and ride, ride & ride some more. :yahoo:

Thanks all for the congratulations on retirement. Still seems unreal that I'm getting paid while riding my bike, but I like it a lot! It's funny...for each month you stay alive they send you another check.

Congrats on the retirement - I've still got a few years and three kids to get through college first. We've been looking to buy some land (30 or 40 acres) out there, however, just to sit on until we retire. What's the area look like for open land for sale?

Congrats! That's the same area my wife and I are looking at retiring. She loves it down around there, more so since she started riding herself

There're a lot of both land and houses for sale. My real estate agent immediately sent me 70 listings that met my criteria when I started the process. Now's the time to buy if you're interested. I doubt prices and interest rates will ever be lower. The rock bottom real estate market informed my somewhat early retirement.

I'll be down that way next week, riding the BRP south to northern GA. I'll be on my '93 GSX1100G with Rifle fairing & GIVI 3 bag luggage. Wave me over if you spot me, I'm always up for a cup of mud and some BSing.

Mucho jealous of your retirement, but wish you very well none the less.

I've got 9 more years to go before the world can kiss my a$$.

I just returned from 2400 miles of NC/TN/GA Smokeys and - waaaa hoooo - did I have a blast.

Have fun - we only get one life to live. I pity the poor suckers that wait for their dreams to come true....
