Last year I bought a seat from Rick Mayer Cycle for my 2007 FJR. It was a troubling experience which I think Forum members may want to know about. Please read on.

My short legs and FJR are a poor mix. Last year I checked out some friends' FJRs with after-market saddles to see if any would get me closer to the ground. Rick Mayer's seem the best, so I contacted Rick and told him what I wanted. He said he could build me a saddle which would be lower but still offer comfort and support. He asked me to send him pictures of me sitting on my bike with the stock saddle so he could see how I couldn't flat-foot it. I sent Rick the pictures and a check for the new seat. Rick builds his seats from your original pan. Because I wanted to keep my seat until the new one arrived, I also had to send him a $400 check as a deposit

Late last summer the seat arrived. It was beautiful and well-made. However, it was no lower. I called Rick and he said that after a short ride the foam would compress and I'd be sitting closer to the ground. I road 100 miles with the new seat but the foam did not compress (seems like that's a good thing). I called Rick and told him and he said I should send the seat back and he would remake it. I appreciated that. However, I had to pay the return shipping. I didn't like that, but I paid it.

In a short while the "remade" seat arrived. I put it on the bike and ------ no change. Again, a nice seat, but same height as stock. I tried riding with it, but the seat height remained unchanged. I again called Rick. He claimed to have remade the seat to get me closer to the ground. I told him that this wasn't going to work and asked for a full refund. Rick agreed and I mailed him back the seat (again at my own expense).

Rick received the seat on November 5. I waited a couple weeks, but no refund came. I emailed Rick on November 25. He responded the next day saying a refund would be issued. When no refund came I emailed again on December 6. Rick called the next day and said a refund had been issued. Apparently he thought a credit card refund had been issued. When I reminded him that I paid by check, he asked me to send him a copy of it. He had no record of it and, more disturbing, the $400 deposit check was now missing.

That day I faxed copies of both checks to Rick. On December 9 he emailed saying a refund check would be mailed the next day. The refund didn't come and so I emailed Rick on December 18. He replied, telling me to be patient because the mail was slow due to the holidays. I waited a couple more days and emailed Rick that my patience had run out and would consider legal action to get a refund.

Well, that must have done it because the check arrived on January 3. It was in an envelope postmarked December 27! Rick hadn't mailed it when he said he did but dragged his feet up until the point I threatened to take action. It took almost two months from the date Rick received my seat for him to put my refund in the mail. And he had lied, telling me he had mailed it previously. But what really crunched my cookie was he deducted $70.00 from the refund for his shipping cost which he said was "policy". He didn't pay $70 to ship the saddle. And it wasn't my fault he couldn't build the saddle I wanted. And his "policy" had no mention of deducting shipping costs. And he never told me he would deduct this amount. I communicated all of this to Rick in an email with another threat of further action. He agreed to refund the $70.00 which he did.

Having told my sad story let me be clear. Rick makes a good seat, appears to be a nice guy and did respond to my calls and emails. However, his business practices are crap. He promised a product he couldn't produce, lost the record of my sale, lost my $400 deposit check and lied about mailing me a refund check when he knew he hadn't. He tried to cut my full refund by $70 which he never told me, wasn't part of his policy and wasn't his true shipping costs.

I decided not to take a chance with my $400 deposit check floating around somewhere. I went to the bank and paid $30 to stop the check. That and the $57 I paid to twice mail the seat back to Rick means that I spend $87 for the privilege of sitting on, but not owning, a Rick Mayer saddle.

Thought you all should now this.

Though not nearly as bad as yours, I didn't have a very good experience with the Rick Mayer saddle I bought. I ended up getting one from his brother, Bill Mayer, and have extremely satisfied. Good luck.

I had excellent luck with Rick Mayer when I bought my seat about 2 1/2 years ago. As you say, a finished product of excellent quality. Final fit was subject to the same limitations as would apply by mail-order since I dropped off the seat and rode in to pick it up later. No money issues at all.

Sorry you had the opposite experience,

RsvlFeej

I had a goldwing back n 02 an had my problems with diamond seats. Not money wise but in fitment, this guy is 6'3 or better and doesn't know how to make a seat for some one with a short inseam and I never did get a fit that was any better than stock.

This reflects my experience. I love the saddle (had a Bill Mayer on a previous bike -- liked that too). Had no problems with the business side of it.

I have to admit, though, that Jon's story is pretty bad.

I'm inseam challenged, and after returning me RM seat once for some tweaks (didn't have ride in capability, living in Houston), am totally satisfied. There's no way to compare my current saddle to the stocker...

Update on my saga with Rick Mayer Cycle. If you read my original post, you know that Rick deducted $70 from my refund, claiming it was his shipping costs. When I complained, he mailed me a $70 check. Well guess what -- the check bounced. And that cost me a $10 fee from my bank for a total of $80 lost. So now I've spent over $150 and I don't have anything to show for it except aggravation.

I strongly recommend folks don't do business with Rick Mayer.

Update to my update on my Rick Mayer seat saga. To his credit, Rick sent me an $80 money order by FedEx express to cover the bounced check and the $10 fee my bank charged me (yes, a lot of banks have jacked up their fees. This is the first time I've had a bounced check so I wasn't too worried about the fee).

Rick also sent a nice note apologizing for the bounced check. Again, I have to say he appears to be a really nice guy, makes a good product and seemed sincere in his apology. He just needs to improve his business practices.

I rode 300+ miles home with the 08 FJR on a new Rick Mayer seat, and have good first impressions. I bought the Vinyl Basket Weave Dual (for passenger comfort). They seem to offer great lateral support, without restricting lean too much. They are about an inch higher than stock, and a little firmer than stock, initially. According to Rick, it will soften and compress some with break-in miles.

If you live in CA, do yourself a favor and schedule the ride in to get your seats done; shipping them back and forth can be a pain. Rick is a great guy, and delivered on his promises. That, plus a great product at a great price, makes me a happy customer. I'll update the review after a couple thousand miles.

These pictures lighten the seats a couple shades (flash glare); they're actually a little darker.

I just received my Rick Mayer seat. I opted for the leather, dual seat. In the past I have owned 3 Russell Day-Long seats and was very pleased with them. Due to their extended lead time, I decided to give Rick Mayer a try. Besides having only a 2 month lead time, he has Yamaha FJR seat pans in stock. This is important to us FJR riders because you do not have to be without a seat for weeks at a time. Once you have received Rick's seat, you do send him your old one. With Russell Products, you have to send them your seat and it is a very long wait to ride again.

The quality of my new seat is outstanding. Easily as good as Russell's if not better. After my first ride with the new seat I knew I had made the right decision. Super comfortable and the leather makes it easy to move around when needed. Long, extended rides will be no problem.

While my seat was under production, I received a couple of call's from Rick, confirming my wants and needs. What a great guy to deal with. He easily exceeded my expectations with his knowledge, quality and service

If you are considering a truly custom made seat for your bike, I highly recommend Rick Mayer.

Here's the link to his site. Rick Mayer Cycle

Thanks Rick!

Just a quick update to the last post.

After 3000 miles, the seat(s) are breaking in nicely. The rider's seat is softer than when new, and is soooooo much better than stock. I rode 300 miles today, and 960 miles in one day a couple of weeks ago. Other bodyparts give out before my butt. My wife loves the passenger (it's the dual model) seat; she complained constantly about the stock one, but has no problem w/ 4+ hours now.

I'm very happy with this seat, and highly recommend Rick. Just be prepared to give up your seat pans for a few weeks, or put down a big deposit to use his.

I have waited patiently to post this hoping that Rick would take care of the issue I have, but unfortunately I just get the run around.

On March 1 of this year I sent Rick my information and also a credit card number for three seats I was having built. He promptly charged my card for one of the three. I had no problem with this as I felt he was probably using it as a deposit.

Then on March 21 I was charged for all three saddles. I sent a message to Rick and he said it was an accident and they would look into it, but they were real busy right now and it would be later!!

I have sent numerous messages and I just keep getting put off and told that someone would take care of the credit.

It is now the 30th of April and I have no credit and he leaves me no choice but to dispute the charge with my credit card company due to RMC's reluctance to issuing my credit.

Granted, he builds a quality seat, but his customer service stinks. If you order a seat from him make sure that you use a credit card and NOT a debit card so you have recourse. You have absolutely no recourse if you use a debit card.

I will post an update when it is cleared up.

Tony

Well, I tried two more times to communicate with RMC and they will not answer email messages. I have now filed a dispute with the credit card company along with all the email correspondence from RMC where they state that they did in fact double charge me, but it would be later before they look into it as they were busy!

This is unfortunate due to the quality of his product. It looks to me as though he needs someone to take care of business for him and he needs to build seats.

Tony

Finally on the 8th of May my account was issued a credit. This was after a long he said - she said ordeal.

When my first two saddles were ready I was called and asked if I wanted expedited shipping. I asked at that point what the charge would be for three day shipping. After being on hold a while, I was finally told it would be an additional $25.00 per seat. I agreed to that and my seats were sent and the additional $50 was to be deducted from the credit they owed me.

Weeks later, and after several more messages I was told the credit would be calculated and Rick would review it and send me an invoice. I finally recieved the invoice and the additional shipping was nearly double what I was quoted! When I objected to the amount over what I authorized they immediately told me they made an error, but I should accept it as I should expect to pay additonal charges for having it sent faster than ground and that is what they were charged by Fedex.

I explained that I would have waited the additional time rather than pay more than the extra $25.00 per seat. After several heated exchanges via e-mail, and after 6 weeks passed of notifying them of their error, credit was issued in the amount of the overcharge less the $50 I was originally quoted.

I have no ill will towards Rick, but he really needs someone to take care of his business. I don't know his financial situation, but after reading the first post in this thread and then the problems I had, I have my suspicions as to why credit was so long in coming.

I must say his saddles are top notch and I am completely satisfied with the product, but his business practices are in the dumper. I must say he did respond to his messages, but they were generally filled with excuses and false promises.

If you use RMC, make sure that you communicate via email and save ALL correspondence with them. It is your best line of defence in the event of a problem especially if you file a dispute with the credit card company.

I had my bike only 10 days before I took a 3-hour ride to get a custom saddle from Rick Mayer on a ride-in appointment.

Rick's a great guy and the seat is awesome! I was his last customer of the day and we went for a ride on his local twisties and to the Sundial bridge.

I'm really happy with the quality and comfort of the seat.
