Who's been to the Grand Canyon?

Who's been to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon?

Two totally different experiences. Well, here's your chance to see the beautiful and tranquill North Rim and enjoy some motorcycle camraderie while you are at it.

Join me and the infamous Burrito Ballerina for an overnighter to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon!

At 8500 feet in elevation and nestled in the pines, it will be a pleasant respite from the heat, and sure to please with the awe-inspiring views. Not chaotic like the south rim, it will be a relatively quiet and peaceful experience.

Here's some photos from my recent scouting trip:

When: Saturday and Sunday, August 23 & 24, 2008

Saturday night lodging will be at the Grand Canyon Lodge that is right on the edge of the north rim. Act fast to secure reservations!!!! Currently (6/9), there are 4 motel rooms (1 queen only) and 21 Frontier cabins (1 double & 1 single bed) available. I expect these to go fast so don't delay! You will need to pay for your room when you call to reserve. Full refund for cancellations is available if done prior to 48 hours before date of stay.

Use this thread to find a roommate to split costs. A frontier cabin is only $56/person if split two ways!

Call 877-386-4383 to make your reservations. (I suggest you ask for Krissy)

Details on the lodging can be found at this link: CLICK HERE!

The Grand Canyon Lodge has a restaurant, a SALOON!!! (open till 11pm), as well as a coffee shop and general store. It has a couple outdoor patios where the view is incredible, and one has a large outdoor fireplace which is lit nightly.

Departure Point: Chevron on Carefree Highway, just east of I-17.

Time: Kickstands up at 0700 hrs! Let's get out of the heat!!!

General plan is to head directly up to the north rim. It's 326 miles from the Chevron station. Stops for gas at Flagstaff and Jacob Lake, before heading south to the north rim. Lunch stop at Jacob Lake or the Grand Canyon Lodge. Plans are flexible.

Once there, folks can ride to one of several vista points such as Cape Royal. A 23 mile (one way) ride from the Lodge for what has been described as "one of the best views of the Grand Canyon". Or, hike some of the north rim trails. And of course just chillin on one of the patios is always an excellent idea.

After dinner, cocktail hour on the patio in front of a fire.

For more info on all things to do at the North Rim, CLICK HERE!

So come join us for a memorable overnighter!

Buenas tardes El Pendejo Grande del Rey el Mundo y mas Guapo,

Just confirmed my Grand Canyon North Rim cabin at $119.48 with Jarrod and received my seven digit confirmation number.

Uri and Sylvia Schumm will get the double bed in my frontier, and I'll take the single. Will be on www.azbeemers.org ASAP.

Muchas gracias y mas recuerdos, Chuy Medina "El Burrito Ballerina"

I'm heading there after NAFO.
Assuming your FJR actually runs once you put that 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle back together.

:tease:
I would like to direct this to the distinguished member of this forum: You lousy cork-soaker. You have violated my farging rights. Dis somanumbatching country was founded so that the liberties of common patriotic citizens like me could not be taken away by a bunch of fargin iceholes... like you.

You shouldn't make fun of my FJR engine building abilities. My mother made fun of my FJR engine building abilities once.......ONCE!

I've really wanted to ride there and finish a book I started a couple of years ago while dangling my legs over the edge!

Don't worry, I don't have any tendencies!

It's tempting so, maybe just maybe!

Good Morning Greg, I would imagine you are still in your hearts and whales pajamas and your blue bunny slippers at this time of day, while snuggling with your favorite teddy "Mr. Bear". But, you better crack the whip on this FJR crew to get them registered for Ride to the Rim! Already getting private and public response at www.azbeemers.org And most importantly, Scott Conley - BMW enthusiast extraordinary and AZ Beemers member has already reserved at least one of the rooms.

I don't know if you've met Scott on any of our Arizona FJR Forum and AZB Group Rides or not. But, he's the sole owner of Matrix Motosports https://www.matrixmotosports.com/ and is a mover and shaker in the Arizona Desert Ducati Owners Club.

If you have not met Scott, I would imagine that you have met his son - Skyler Conley. Skyler, along with Rory Palmer, are sponsored riders from Ducati Scottsdale and I go to Firebird Raceway to see them often competing for Team Matrix Racing.

It's bad enough that our FJR's are having to contend with Geoff Oprandy and his BMW K1200S with its Euro illegal soft & hardware that lets that beast run 200mph; I don't mind being humiliated by a fellow BMW owner/rider from my own club.

But having Scott's pasta grinding friends rub our FJR noses in the dirt with their 916's and 1098's is going to be too much!

Hola Tim, Barry, Richard and other Californians: It would make more sense in coming to Ride to the Rim to run Interstate 40 and meet us in Flagstaff, Arizona. But, if any of you elect to start this trip in Phoenix; I have a spare bedroom available.

My information is below and my home is on MapQuest; pool and Weber BBQ in the backyard, you can stay coming or going.

I imagine you probably could also stay with SkooterG; but, remember to bring along three pairs of Levi's with you. That is so you can pull them all on, one pair each over the other, before you go to sleep. I am not trying to warn you about GregM!

But after rooming with Skoot over the last four years on the trips I've led him to Mexico on he does one real annoying thing.

Before he retires, he always says out loud: "I'd rather hear a fat boy fart than a pretty girl sing!" Rough to relax after that!

me likes the north rim and would love to tie this in with a NM trip with Kathy ....

problem is that this is the weekend before the "run what ya brung" and not sure I can squeeze it in with available (or lack of) time.

Good on ya Greg, this looks awesome, I'll keep it on the radar and try to make it, but unfortunately very doubtful.

SkooterG: The hotel/motel rooms are now gone and the available frontier cabins, only lodgings left, are down to a -dozen.

Here are the 6 rooms and AZB people, with wives & girlfriends, that're already secured in frontier cabins for Saturday night:

Uri Schumm

Don Stanley

Scott Conley

Bob Flanders

Mike Froehlich

Jim Cratos

Currently makes 5 BMW's and one FJR; I'm riding FJR to balance things out. I'm betting the cabins will be gone by Sunday!!

My advice to my fellow FJR Forum members is to go ahead and make a reservation if uncertain; 48 hour cancellation policy!

I'm in, I think.

Will have to leave Tucson around 4:30 to make 7:00 start.

Never been to the North Rim.

Hi Joe: Glad that you'll make the Rim Ride with us. I've lived in Chandler, Arizona for twenty years now, moving over from my hometown of Morro Bay, California; and it's amazing to me how many Arizonans have never been to the North Rim!!

Number of riders in my club, www.azbeemers.org are clamoring for a breakfast stop in Flagstaff. So I'll talk to GregM soon about designating a restaurant on the Main Drag, Route 66, in Flag. So if you are running late, meet us at our breakfast.

Thanks, that sounds great.

I have lived in AZ 55yrs.

It is kind of sad I haven't been there.

I will attempt this one. Probably have to stay the night with kids in Flagstaff, otherwise its over 200 miles to the start. Sometimes living in the middle of no where hampers your ability to socialize much.
