that would be yours truelly.well, just layed the fjr down today. took a turn at about 55mph and hit a slick area. bike went right out from under me..... am wondering what to do about the insurance. i have dairyland full coverage. from what i can calculate right now, the damage is somewhere between $4000 and $4500 just for the parts. just wanted to get opinions about what is a good threshold to make a claim. any input on how much rates are affected by such a claim would be great. also, does anyone know if there is an industry standard to determine at what point the bike is totalled? i have heard if the damage exceeds around 65 or 70 percent of the book value, then they total it. true? the bike is an '05 non abs with about 8800 miles.thanks for any input.

Don't know how the insurance thing will work out, but I am glad that hear you made it home ok?

MC,

First, I am glad you appear to be OK  !

Second, call your insurance agent - that is WHY you have it.

Third, if it is NOT too late, it might be a good idea to go and get pictures of the area showing that there was a slick element on the road.

Best Regards,

Shane

You probably should take the bike to the Yamaha dealer and let them estimate the damage. If you all ready looked up the part numbers give them what you have it will help them do the estimate a little faster. Don't use a discount parts place for your prices. They will also estimate the labor to fix it and that might be enough to total it if that is what you want. Goodluck and glad you were okay.

Good point. On your estimates, get a dealer-quote since and insurance company may try to "dicker" with those prices. If you then choose to go discount after the fact (with OEM replacement parts, of course) that's your call. But getting discounted quotes up front might result in the insurance company trying to "dicker" down even farther which would leave you short of what you need for the repare.

And, at 55mph, there may be more than cosmetic damage involved.

bummer...

glad yer ok...

check the front sub-frame attachment castings (forward side of the neck)... if these are sheared off, welcome to fjr 2006...

you pay for ins, use it... it's just part of the deal...

"check the front sub-frame attachment castings"

where are they exactly(little more specific for me please) and what do they look like? thanks.

yes, i am ok. being the genius i am, i decided that it was just too damn humid for that silly riding jacket and removed it mid ride. well, 20 minutes later my boots, gloves, riding pants aaaaand my right forearm were toast. anyway, aside from the little bit of roadrash on my right arm, i am fine. the riding pants saved my ***..literally! i went down on my right knee then on to my arse. if not for the pants, it would've been a sure trip to the hospital. it's all good. i hope the thing is totalled. the insurance adjuster should be in touch with me today or tomorrow. if it's not totalled, i will get the parts with the ins. money and repair it myself. if it is :D , well here i come '06. just need to decide if it will be an A or AE model!

well, looks like an '06 may be in my future. the claims adjuster called me today and said she stopped counting the damage at $10,800. it is a total loss. they will be calling me monday with the settlement offer. anyone have a good idea what an '05 with 8800 miles might be worth( to the insurance co.)?

Full retail plus the maximum add on money. Those leathers, helmet and farkles all need to be replaced, too. Can you get any loss of use? You know these are special order bikes. And in California, folks are paying well over retail.

(although if you don't want to wait, there's an '05 sitting on my dealer's show room floor. He can't seem to sell the darn things around here...)

Glad you survived. Right side U say! Does it bother anyone else that the left side foot peg/shifter bracket bolts on and the right side is part of the frame & it looks it is just out there waiting to be broke off? I put my Mokos on for sure but it still bothers me. Later,,, De

In Minnesota only your helmet is covered. Any other safety gear, your britches, boots, gloves, and add on farkles like a GPS will have to be claimed under your homeowners policy.

At least it was this way in 2001.

Good luck, and really glad you came out relatively unscathed

Glad to hear you're okay. If insurance doesn't cover the gear, contact the manfacturers, sometimes they'll replace it gratis.

Good luck with the insurance. Im in the car business and see people have to fight with the insurance companies all the time. I hope they treat you better. Keep all of us informed. Most important that you are ok though.

There is a new '05 w/out ABS on the floor of Excel Motorsports in Concord, NC. No connection with them myself. Not where I bought my bike. They of course have the list price on the tag. However, it's sitting way over in the corner and I'll bet they would like to get rid of it. I work at the airport in Charlotte, NC and would be happy to give you a ride to the dealership.
