A video released by the Oregon State Police shows a motorcycle accident caught live on a trooper’s in-car camera parked on I-84 in The Dalles.

First, a motorcycle slides by Trooper Michael Holloran on the outside lane, then the cyclist is seen rolling along the shoulder. The wreck was about 7:18 a.m. on June 18th.

Police released the video to warn motorcyclists of the dangers of careless driving, said The Dalles Area Command Sgt. Pat Shortt.

"It only takes a second for something to happen that you may have to react to while keeping your vehicle under control," he said.

Holloran was jotting down notes. He heard a fast-moving vehicle, looked in his side mirror when he saw the motorcycle go down. His radar had clocked the bike at 85 mph.

The cyclist, Kenneth C. Theiman, 31, of Dallesport, Wash., suffered minor abrasions. He pled guilty in Wasco County circuit court of careless driving.

I wonder what led to the careless driving conviction. Is crashing a motorcycle on public roads itself considered careless driving because of demonstrated lack of control, or was it just the speed?

I wish we could see what caused the crash.

I think I know that stretch and if you're coming around the slow corner at 85+ in a 65 zone......it might be the classic old "Oh **** it's a COP!" panic ritual.....followed by a vain brake grab....followed by a front end going swoosh.....then go sliding down the road like an idiot trick. It's rarely captured on video though. ;)

Standing up after the crash, limping, and then getting hauled to the hospital earns and extra 0.2 from the East German judge.

But he lost the same amount of points when he missed "sticking" his landing by not ending up on his feet.

And I concur with Iggy's crash analysis after going through that section of road yesterday. But at only 5-6 over the posted speed I wasn't worrying too much about bear-hunting.

I think Ignacio "nailed it"!

Ix-nay on the upid-stay! :dribble:

"I just looked up....."

...and saw your cruiser. I was riding at an extreme rate of speed and I went into panic mode and grabbed the front brake while fixating on your police car. Dang, drat, heck and pshaw! I feel so stoopid!

I'd bet the speeding ticket would have been cheaper....especially in the "long run" as this is likely to severely affect his insurance premium.

In 1990 I was cited for careless driving when I lost the front end under braking and lowsided. ORS 811.135 says a person comits the offense of careless driving if they drive in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property. The trooper explained that in his view the fact that braked so hard, locked the wheel and crashed in fair weather and road conditions was enough to meet the statute. I did not fight the ticket.
