Received a call from my shaken riding friend last night. He is a well seasoned rider of 50 years, starting with dirt bikes as a small kid. He has done alot of touring around the U.S. We went to Alaska together and he went back again by himself above the arctic circle on a BMW PD. Sat., he and his wife were returning home from a week long loop of Missouri. They have a second home in the Ozarks mountains so they were only about 2 hours from home. When his wife goes along, they take the big Honda Valkarie full dresser and pull a trailer.

They were going 45 in a 50 mph zone at 10 am in a rural area north of Branson somewhere enjoying the good weather. A big dog come charging out of a woods-ditch at full speed and ran into his front wheel. He didn't see the dog until he was almost at the bike. The dog probably hit in front of the axle, turning the wheel toward the center line. He went off the bike over the handle bars on the right side. His wife went off the right side also. Both hit pavement first before tumbling and tumbling in the grassy ditch. The car following behind them saw everything, were EMT's, and had them both stay still in the ditch until the rescue squad arrived. His wife indicated to him she was awake. He said he made a deal with "the maker" if they got out of this ok, he would give up motorcycling, that this must be a sign. (We both said we would never remarry too!!!) They had helmets on, leather riding boots(which wore through), just jeans and riding jackets without armor. Said he was glad for the full face, because it ground down one side of the helmet. It could have been his face!!!

The dog was dead in the opposite ditch. The rescue squad arrived after 25 mins. They were placed on backboards and transported. Xrays showed he had several broken ribs, two completely dislocated fingers which they fixed, and scrapes. He said he has never been so sore and can hardly walk. His wife has nothing broken, but must have landed on her butt. She can barely walk with a walker!!! Because it was a weekend in a small town, they couldn't rent a car. Their clothes had been cut off by the hospital and didn't know anybody. A minister/farmer? at the hospital gave them a ride to the impounded Honda so they could get some dirty clothes out of the trailer and then gave them a two hour ride home!!!! The minister wouldn't take any $'s. Said this is what we do!!! The minister is going to trailer his bike to their home today!!!!. Can you believe it? What nice people. A nice donation will be going to the church!!!!!

A group of us are suppose to meet at Daytona Biketoberfest in 2 weeks. He doesn't know if he will make it this year and if he does, it will be with a car? Time will tell!!!!!

THAT is as scary as the Bambi Ride by Dcarver! Wut er yew gonna dew win thet dang-ol' dog comes a-chargin' frum nowhere's?

How fortunate for them there were qualified rescue people at the scene and finding a "friend" like that minister is more than a stroke of good fortune.

Good news that they are relatively unscathed from a situation like they survived. Keep us updated on their recovery and send them our good thoughts and prayers.

I have had a lot of dogs chase me while riding fire roads up in the Sierra. I have the feeling that people that grow weed up in the hills keep the mean dogs around. It's disconcerting to be a newbie on dirt and have a pit bull snapping at you. One bit my riding boot once. Thank goodness for the tough make up of dirt riding boots. I love my dog, but she doesn't run across roads, or chase people. Ever. Owners that don't control their dogs are liable for the damage they cause. I hope they find the dog's owners and get their insurance company in on the act. I'm glad your friends are relatively okay.

One would have to see these folks were being looked out for from the very beginning of their get-off. Glad their ok and ditto's to the preacher. PM. <>< :clapping:

This supports my position: we're not qualified to tell how badly we are or aren't injured. Wait for professionals to check you out if you go down (on the bike. I mean.... :glare: )

The dog was dead in the opposite ditch.
Good riddance, little *******.
