The Italian Scallion
The Po [paw] is Italy’s longest river and runs West to East across the the country’s northern plains. With a total length of around 400 miles it’s no Mississippi or Nile but it’s still an awesome waterway that has shaped the history of a large part of this country.
Its delta branches out into the Adriatic sea some 100 kms South of Venice and it’s a fascinating, ever-changing area with its own wildlife and climate.
We’d been planning a 2-day outing to this area for a while and last weekend’s weather was just right. Temperatures in the upper sixties and sunshine unlimited. Our FJR buddies came from all over the North of Italy and we congregated in the old city of Ravenna, where a substantial heritage of the Byzantine Empire is still standing.
It was an unusual weekend without mountain twisties. We spent most of the time riding on straight and flat roads, crossed a number of rivers and canals on ferries and pontoon bridges, visited churches dating back 1.5 millennia or so and ate excellent seafood. We covered just about 600 miles and did not once get in trouble with the law.
Old buildings in the city center
Cobblestones, old-style gaslights and a lone cyclist. Er…are we in 1807 or 2007?
The lighthouse at Marina di Ravenna, a favorite RV spot for the local M/C crowd
St Apollinare is a Byzantine church built in 650 AD...
...And is famous for its incredibly well preserved mosaics.
Check out this 1400-year-old ceiling.
Here’s some of us standing in the carpark by the Basilica
Fishing cabins in the Delta
A pontoon bridge spanning one of the Delta’s many channels
Two brand-new 2007s joined the group on this outing
And here’s a partial lineup of our group
Finally, I thought I’d just mention the great food... but then I decided I'd take some pictures of our simple fare instead and let you judge for yourselves...
And the wine? Like those damn Redcoats, the more we knocked down, the more kept a comin’
But, have no fear, our hotel was next door to the restaurant and we all managed to stagger back safely.
