The Po [paw] is Italy’s longest river and runs West to East across the the country’s northern plains. With a total length of around 400 miles it’s no Mississippi or Nile but it’s still an awesome waterway that has shaped the history of a large part of this country.

Its delta branches out into the Adriatic sea some 100 kms South of Venice and it’s a fascinating, ever-changing area with its own wildlife and climate.

We’d been planning a 2-day outing to this area for a while and last weekend’s weather was just right. Temperatures in the upper sixties and sunshine unlimited. Our FJR buddies came from all over the North of Italy and we congregated in the old city of Ravenna, where a substantial heritage of the Byzantine Empire is still standing.

It was an unusual weekend without mountain twisties. We spent most of the time riding on straight and flat roads, crossed a number of rivers and canals on ferries and pontoon bridges, visited churches dating back 1.5 millennia or so and ate excellent seafood. We covered just about 600 miles and did not once get in trouble with the law.

Cobblestones, old-style gaslights and a lone cyclist. Er…are we in 1807 or 2007?

...And is famous for its incredibly well preserved mosaics.

And here’s a partial lineup of our group

Finally, I thought I’d just mention the great food... but then I decided I'd take some pictures of our simple fare instead and let you judge for yourselves...

And the wine? Like those damn Redcoats, the more we knocked down, the more kept a comin’

But, have no fear, our hotel was next door to the restaurant and we all managed to stagger back safely.

Great pictures too. It must have been an excellent ride!

Hey Stef,

I know you had a glass for us!

How'd the back hold up?

And how did Chris get you into a church?

She told me there was free wine-tasting inside....

As for my back, it held up fine, I guess  .

In the group picture I'm the one in the bright mil-spec vest. Looks like I swallowed a broomstick :glare:

I started to lick the screen until some people in the office were looking at me funny...

Sounds like a great trip! Me = Jealous!!!

I backpacked across Europe for a month and spent some good times in Italy. I love how you order several coarses and a meal is considered an experience. When I first ate at a restaurant in Italy, we sat for like 20 minutes before we realized you have to ASK for the check! They don't just slap it down on the table to signal you the next table is waiting and your waitor is done serving you!

We have just produced a video of our event which you're welcome to download HERE

It's a hefty 100MB but you might enjoy watching it.

The captions are in Italian but you don't need them to figure out what's going on. It's a bike rally not a lesson in rocket science.

Two things do need explaining: the rally's name is Parakulentreffen a German-sounding pun we made up to signify: The Cool Riders Meeting. (It obviously only works in Italian...)

As for the second one, at one point in the video I'm offered a cube-shaped egg on a plate. It's a real chicken egg. I know because I ate it. I've been told such eggs are laid by hens that have been impregnated by a rooster with an Allen key for a d*ck... This part I'm still trying to wrap my head around ;)

Edit: updated URL of video link

Sorry Mike, ethnic profiling of chickens is against the law... but I did eat the square egg, honest!

Here's why :glare: Whole sections of this country's road network have been turned into "U-boot alleys". You run a gauntlet composed of ludicrously low speed limits (35 mph on a four-lane divided highway is typical) and fixed radars and cameras everywhere. You are going to get nabbed. Doing 40 in a 35 zone like I described will cost you 2 points and a couple hundred bucks. It's not so much the patrolling LEOs, there are margins of discussion with them.

It's the one-eyed bandits set up by small-town administrations to balance the books that piss me off  (and a million other road users).

That is totally effed!

How the shiza did I miss this ride? Oh yeah...I had to work! I did manage a ride up to Como & Bellagio a couple weekends ago...met another FJR rider at a fuel station in Bergamo. Didn't catch his name though. He was riding an '06...I think he had an '04 before...nice guy.

I'm going to meet up with you folks eventually Stef!
