a tribute to Bill 'Snap' Lines who lost his life two days ago, Jan 26th riding his motorcycle home from a PGR mission in Georgia. He was humble, lovable man. I know a walking hero when I see one. SSG Lines Earned The Distinguished Service Cross for his Distinguished and Gallant Bravery in Vietnam. Snap was also the recipient ...of 5 Bronze Stars (ALL with V for Valor), 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Army Commendation Medals, The Combat Infantryman Badge. Airborne Jump Wings, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Numerous other Awards. Snap was also put in for the Congressional Medal of Honor. As you can see my friend was truly an American Hero.
Snap was a humble man, but, again, I know a walking hero when I see one. Of course, like his combat brothers, he always referred to the only heros were the one's with their names on the Vietnam Wall. I didn't know his brother's name was on the Wall or I would have made an etching of it when I was there last May. His reputation was, when he was feeling decent, to make a PGR mission in any weather. He didn't seem to mind to be hot, cold, or wet. He was not a flamboyant dresser with a vest full of patches, insignia, or awards. He always wore plain, well used denim overalls over a white shirt.
When I met his wife Linda in May '08, we kinda bonded and she learned I was a member of CMA (Christian Motorcyclists Assoc) and a prayer warrior. She is such a sweet lady and always at Snap's side in good times and bad, in good health and not so good.
I miss my hero and a mentor, Snap deeply. Will be riding to Montgomery, AL to attend his funeral God willing. Snap, here's my best 'snappy' salute, Sir. Until we meet again. <sigh>
