It looks like the road south out of Randall (131??) goes all the way south to Carson & Stevenson? Do any of you south folks know if that's open?

Yes. It turns into the forest service road FS25, goes by the Windy Ridge road (FS99) . Connects to the FS90 road at Northwood. You can follow it all the way out towards Trout Lake (becomes the FS23 road somewhere along the way. Great roads, a little rough from frost heaves in places. On the FS 90 road you can also take the cut off to SR14 about 5 miles after you turn onto the FS 90 road.

You will want to fill up in Packwood or Randal. Great resturant at the Cheveron station at Trout Lake where it comes into SR 141 (I think) Then it comes in at White Salmon on SR 14 at the Columbia River Gorge.

Enjoy!

Perennial question. Current status of the road is here.

The FJR is plenty capable...it's usually a question of the rider. ;)

Thanks, guys. I'll give it a try. I've got plenty of Advil for the ol back!

I'd like to camp near Hood River somewhere. I think then I'll head towards John Day area.

I was up there just a few weeks ago. Go on a weekday, you will be blocked by very few cars. Great riding. F.S. roads 25 and 99 are Destination Highways 4 and 2 respectively. Enjoy.

I'll just add that while still a great ride, this road has progressively been deteriorating over the past few years and is extremely rough in spots with huge frost heaves - we're talking four-inch heaves in some corners. Don't get too frisky - I've got a friend that is still in hospital rehab from a crash six-weeks ago that nearly broke his back. I still enjoy this road, but the FR25 part up to elk summit is no so rough I just troll it rather than sportride it.

Thanks again. I'll keep an eye on the frost parts. I don't much 'sportbike' the FJR anymore.... at least when I'm fully loaded with gear. I have my ZX-14 for that stuff. I'll be on a nice casually 'photo' pace.

Just a warning: don't park the bike on the edge of the road near steep dropoffs! My buddy was riding on his GSXR1000 following another guy when all of a sudden this other guys bike back wheel locked up and he came to a smokey stop. A rock had become lodged in his chain! Granted, this won't be a problem for us FJR owners. The problem to avoid is what happened to my buddy's GSXR during the aftermath. He parked just off the edge of the road after the smokey stop by his friend. While inspecting the stuck rock, he heard a crashing sound and turn to see his bike tumble down the hill when the ground gave way! His bike was still rideable after great efforts to get it back up to the road, but the insurance company totaled it.
