Apparently, Dunlop has a new version of the Roadsmart tire available. Was wondering if anybody here has tried them?

Nice article. Too bad they weren't comparing to the BS BT-023 GT, I'd have liked to see how that compares to the other two.

They also never mentioned the Roadsmart front tire's habit of wearing badly.

I have never had any luck with Dunlop tires.

They always seem to wear out in the center no matter what tire pressures are applied and the millage has always been poor.

I don't care for the way they handle either.

IMHO I think there are much better choices available.

Good review, I have considered the Dunlops but still leaning towards the PR3's. 1st i have to burn through the Met, Z6 the bike came with, and so far i still don't like the Z6's.

What i have noticed is .. These tires are Feathering, not sure why? my last bike VFR800 with RP3's also did it. ???? So it must be me and how i ride?? I have played with the air pressure but still no change. Oh well, if anyone has some insight please do tell. I love Tire research and would LOVE to learn more and Design tread patterns. Anyways thanks for the input.

Happy Riding :yahoo:

Hmmmmmm. I ran 4 sets of RoadSmarts and loved every one. The grip was excellent, and I pulled close to 7k out of every set. The only reason I'm running PR3's now is because they had good reviews and there was only a $20 difference for the set.

I ran two sets of Bridgestones on the bike. The OEM BT020s and a rear BT021 with a Pilot Road in front. Compared to the RoadSmarts, the Bridgestones sucked. I've said before that unless I have no other choice, I wont run another set of Bridgestone anything on my bike. There're too many other good choices out there to run BT crap.

Anyone wonder why the BT023GT tires are selling for $200 a set? 'Cuz they're not worth anymore than that.

When these PR3s are done, I'll see how happy I am. If they run well, maybe I'll try another set. If not, I'll prolly go to the RS2s. I never had any front tire issues with the original RSs, and wouldn't expect any with the RS2s.

We've had one of our high mileage riders over here running them for a few thousand miles. I've pinched a couple of his posts so far on what he thinks of the tyres. They appear good in the cold and wet however his riding has been limited. I plan to fit a pair in the not to distant future as I'm a big fan of the original Roadsmart.

"The guy who fits my tyres hadn't seen them before, I was his first customer to buy a pair. He claims they are a much harder compound, noticable just by touching them and he tells me all the manufacturers are trying to keep up with Bridgstone on tyre life.

He also warned me about the very steep profile, he recommended I just put 36psi in the front to try to compensate for the profile but I said I'd ride them on 39psi to get a direct comparisom.

They do turn in very quickly and feel very much more sporty than the old roadsmarts. No doubt due to both of the above. I rode from Camberley (Surrey) to Cambridge and back via Chelmsford yesterday on some very greasy roads with no problems and felt very confident. I would have been a bit worried on the 023GTs in the same conditions but that's only because I have experienced minor slips with them and it does tend to undermine your confidence a bit.

They cost me £249 fitted to loose wheels."

"Not done many miles since fitting the Roadsmart 2s at the beginning of December, only managed to do a couple of thousand last month.

They are certainly very grippy. Just before Christmas I found myself rushing around on some very greasy roads, I was braking late going into junctions etc, kicking it down the gear box at the same time, but the Roadsmarts never twitched. Not once did my ABS activate. I know for sure that I had been on Bridgstone 023GTs my ABS would have been working overtime.

In the dry the roadsmarts grip very well and give loads of confidence. All that remains is to see how long they last. If I had a tread depth gauge I'd measure them to see how they're doing but I can't afford one.

However: There is something about the 023GTs which make them very nice to ride on. They corner nice and feel sportier. They last longer and are cheaper. I shall certainly be fitting some in the spring.

BTW - still struggling to get the wheel weight sticky stuff off, been out there this morning scrubbing and rubbing and polishing too. But it's still there, I'm just slowly wearing it down."

I have no experience with the Dunlop tires, but a buddy of mine does. He claims that the strong point of the Dunlops is that when you are pushing them to their limits in a turn, they are predictable. They let you know that grip is starting to fail rather than suddenly slide out from under you. I will be getting the Pirelli Angel ST this time around but I must admit that the various reviews that I have seen regarding the Roadsmart II makes it a tempting option.

Try WD40.

Now, back on topic...

I do find it amusing when people say that because they have run a completely different model of some particular brand tire (and hated it) all tires of that brand are crap.

Never seen a Dunlop that wasn't a bitch to mount. Lighter fluid (naphtha) works good for cleaning wheels.

The Michelin PR2 "B" spec rear is the worst (motorcycle) tire I've ever mounted. (Car tire was worse)

Makes the Roadsmart seem like a piece of cake.

Also, Dunlop (unlike Michelin) is kind enough to balance mark their tires, which is nice for using fewer weights.

As I recall, one of the main ingredients in Goof Off is Naptha. ;)

To add my tuppence. I have just fitted the Dunlop Roadsmart 2 today.

First impression after making the ride home of some 50 miles in 11 Deg C with damp to wet roads and 30 mph winds.

They are great compared to the ST Angels. The stability has returned to my bike, with 70mph corners, now extremely stable, no weaving. The bike holds its line very well as good as it did with the PR2 I had fitted before. Grip feels to be there but with damp roads and release agent to be scrubbed off, I will report later.

I like my new Roadsmart 2 tyres :)

Andy

I'm interested in this tire...if it is grippier than the PR2 and gets reasonable mileage I may make it my tire of choice. May try it later this year after my present set of PR2s are toast.

Dang it Fred...get those tires on. I want to hear YOUR report.

You document so well...I would get a lot out of that info. You could make a trip way out west (past the Green and Whites) to SE Ohio in May, hit Kentucky and 'southren' Indiana, flash through corn country, hit SW Wisconsin's beautiful rolling hills and German rural charm and a local beer...then head over the top on US 2 and ride over the Mackinac Bridge, then head over to Ontario, bypassing Owosso, and make fun of Tom, Steve, Rob and whoever else happens to be there.

Just DOOOoooooooo it!

:D

EDIT: ...and bring that Alan guy widtcha. :clapping:

My "problem" with testing these new tires is that I just put a set of PR2's in the late fall, right after my aborted car tire experiment. I have been doing a some short, local rides this winter, but have been splitting mileage between the FJR and riding the 'Strom when the roads are crusty with salt. So those PRs only have about 3k miles on them. I have a feeling that you'll be testing these new Roadsmart IIs before me. Maybe you could test them on the way out to NERDS? ;)

Was planning the big CC trip to NAFO this spring, but that seems to be off for us now.

Oh, and that Alan guy is now fully employed, which means he may very well have the money now for such a mid-west trip, but probably can't spare the time off. ;)

PS - Did I ever tell you that I lived in IL for a few years? Yup, we lived in loverly Zion when I was stationed at NTC Great Lakes back in '77-'80. And I still get the pleasure of regularly spending way too much quality time in Cheese-land, as the company I work for is headquartered there. I know there are some nice places hidden away here and there, but I have a feeling if I'm riding in the midwest, I'll just be passin' thru! :p
