I just posted this to the ldrider list:

4-11-2010

Roger is stuck in Cody, Wyoming riding the Dam Tour with what he thought was a bad battery on his FJR. A replacement battery is not charging and he's bump started the bike a couple times but getting charging voltages below 10 volts. Its possible that his Electrosport stator is toast but he doesn't know for sure.

There is no one close on the FJR assistance list and no close Yamaha dealers so if anyone is in or near Cody and can lend a hand give Roger a call at 503-931-0609. At this point a secure storage spot may work.

Thanks,

dougc

Dang, just talked with Stephen and we spent most of this past week there in Cody on work. Hopefully the dealer, who looks like they're open on Monday) can help him out.

I have a good used stock stator I could over night if he needs it. I have been saving it for when My ES dies .

I had an alternator belt fail on my GS in central NV during the White Pine Fever rally. My Rally was done but still needed to get home that Sunday. Bought an auto battery and rigged some jumper cables. Had more than enough volts to make it home.

Definitely a jury-rig, better that the dealer is open manana!

Roger's picked up a big car battery and is leaving at 1st light.

My ride of 270 miles cost 1 volt.

Question-

At what voltage will an FJR quit running?

No clue.

Roger's spot track shows him making tracks so he's on his way with the extra battery rig.

Thanks to all that offered help. He figured this would get him and his bike home the quickest.

I think it's between 11.3 and 11.8 but don't hold me too it

I'd be looking for a charge at 12.0 or soon after

pull the headlight fuse; I'd be OK riding in sunlight without it under these conditions.

yeah, a brother cruiser rider lost his stator at a Gathering 300 miles away from home.

He went to sears and bought the biggest they had riding lawnmower deep discharge battery and a small igloo ice chest that it fit in

<sir, what lawnmower do you have...no you don't understand, I want the largest battery you have for a lawnmower...sir, I can't look it up that way...then let me behind the counter and I'll pick out the one I want>

Attached to pillion seat with jumper cables securing it all well

Got him home OK with pulled headlight fuse :yahoo:

Problem was the Vulcan 750 required an engine pull to replace the stator

<what were you thinking Kawasaki ???>

Roger was reported as making it through Butte, Montana. The alternator charges some as long as he keeps it over 4,000, but he's got all optional electrical devices off and is a bit cold. He won't make it all the way home before dark.

I offered my place to stay as it's on the way for him and about 6 hours from Butte at S&T speeds....putting him here likely an hour or two before dark. A warm bed, hot meal, garage parking spot, and battery charger await if he wants.

Guess he won't be picking up any of the eastern Washington dams on the way home. Glad he's on the move still.

Let me know if you and Roger would want to tackle putting in my stock stator (5k miles on it). Just wanting to lend a hand to a fellow FJR member.

Talked to Roger and his battery is sitting at 12.1 volts and about the Washington/Idaho line. He said it started at 12.3 in Cody so his 1000 CCA battery is running fine...charging some. He's actually joking about documenting it as a "hybrid" SaddleSore. :)

We're going to try and meet up for a taco between 5:30 and 6:00 as he rides through Pasco.

I'd be interested in seeing how Roger secured the battery to the bike. Good to hear he's own his way home.
Fed him a couple tacos from the local taqueria in "mi ciudad" and he had it secured with a couple ratchetstraps to the top of the rear cell. It's something you'd no way pass tech inspection with, but be toasted at the bar after the rally for being utterly emergency functional. A set of jumper cables was perched on the terminals, draped down the bike side, a couple of key spots duct taped on the fairing, and the two right panels off and cables attached on that side.

He had 12.1 volts when he fired it back up and was pondering the approaching remaining hour or two of sunlight.....we may hear about how it went when he plugged the lights back in tomorrow. ;)

Iffn Roger doesn't want it, and you're looking to get rid of it, I'm interested............

At one point, I thought about selling it and then I started hearing about all the Electrosport stators going bad (that's what I have in right now). I've kind of kept it around to get me by if I need it.

Heck, if you were closer I'd give it to you for helping me put in my HID kit. :)
