After reading a bunch of the pinned (and current) topics on oil, I went and got Rotella dino for the first oil change since get my pre-owned, little used 07 in August. Bought it on sale at O'Reilly's last month, based on a forum post about sale pricing, $9.99/gallon. It looked awfully dark coming out of the jug - is that normal? All the other oils I have ever used have been a very pale amber when new. Being dark sure makes it easy to see in the sight glass, however. Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom.

Noticed that too, last week. Just switched over to Rotella, after using the mobil delvac oil for 2000mi, saved it, want to see the color of the rotella after 2000k.

When I was a kid, my buddy, 'Porky', and I sat around the little Skelly gas station in our little town (where he sometimes worked) and tried to make determinations on the relative quality of Skelly oils merely on color alone -- after all, our resources were limited...

Later in life (and after being involved in fleet lube-oil testing and labratory spectography), I became aware of color being one of the least (if not the least?) important factors pertaining to an oil's quality.

But, when that's all you got.... ;)

He was talking about brand new never been used oil.

2000 miles? Yamaha specifies 4000. Me no comprende.

Johnny80s specifies 6000 but you can go to 12000 if you forget to change it. Whoops.

I believe the color is due to it being a "diesel" oil. But I could be wrong.

I have used Rotella T Synthetic in my FJR and VStrom prior to that. (plus two of my autos for years). I like it and feel it's very protective.

Either product is great.

Yes, true...have you tried this;

Allowing the oil to settle over time,

Filtering the oil through and electro-magnet screen funnel to trap any metal that may come out through the oil changing process. Rinse and capture. You use this to measure the shearing if any (most all do) that comes from the engine.

It's a bit more complicated, but it's what I am doing in trying to discover some properties of engine wear and oil protection/cleaning as well. Just things I do when not submerged into work. A theory I am working on.

Using 2000 miles, because that's the measured use I am gauging for all upcoming oils to be tested.

I know that there are many different times for changing oil. Not pushing either one. Just for me - some personal theory test.

Wife is wondering when I am going to get these gallon jugs of oil down to the local autozone. She can't see the filters bagged and labeled(ha ha).

Thanks to all who commented. It was just something I had not run across before and I wanted to seek a bit of collective wisdom to calm my nagging paranoid streak. Fresh oil for winter [sigh] storage seems like a wise investment and fairly cheap insurance in the long run.

Need some help with selecting motor oil for my '07. I live in the San Francisco Bay area and seldom go out when the temps are below 60F. I have a large supply of Spectro semi-syn 20-50 which I use in my '04 BMW R1200C. Is it OK to use it in the '07 FJR? With the Yamaha having a wet clutch, I was once told not to use syn oils as it will damage the clutch (cause slipping). The Spectro I have is not a pure syn, it is a semi-syn. What do you FJR heads think of the oil and the 20-50 issue?

I've probably read a zillion oil threads and still nobody can tell me if, Synthetics.... Taste Great? or are they Less Filling? than dino oils?

Just wondering.

:jester:

***, I need a job

Jeez, volume is volume -- fill it & measure it!

Taste is subjective, like choice of *** partners.

Let us know how it tastes for you...

Everyone knows the ABSOLUTELY BEST oil to use is Wesson oil... at least to ensure a cripsy coating on your fried foods while retaining moistness on the inside.

Now, if I am on the road and need oil for whatever reason, I might use Canola oil, or in a pinch, Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive oil, but.... Wesson, baby, 'dat be The **** to have!

After 2000k miles it will be very, very dark. In the words of Niel Young, it will be the color of "when black is burned".

In fact it will also probably have become sludgelike or solidified completely. Which makes one ask, is it still considered oil at that point, or has it metamorphasized into a grease?

I've heard of cases where irresponsible people have left the oil in their cars for 50k or 100k miles, but never 2000k. In fact, I don't think a car (or FJR for that matter) has ever been built that has gone that far so you'll have to transplant your used oil into another vehicle to get that kind of mileage out of it.

Ohhh.... you meant only 2,000 miles (not k)??

Nevermind...

:p

(it is Friday after all...)
